Overview

IEC 60384-24-1:2006 is a blank detail specification for surface mount fixed tantalum electrolytic capacitors with conductive polymer solid electrolyte (assessment level EZ). It is a supplementary document to the sectional specification (IEC 60384-24) and defines the required style, layout and minimum content that national or manufacturer detail specifications must contain. Detail specifications that do not comply with IEC 60384-24-1 may not be described as being in accordance with IEC requirements.

Key topics and requirements

This document prescribes the structure and mandatory content of detail specifications rather than new electrical design rules. Key elements include:

  • Identification: how to present the issuing body, IEC and national reference numbers, and linkage to the generic and sectional specifications.
  • Capacitor identification: short type description, typical construction notes, outline drawings or references, and the declared assessment level (EZ).
  • General data: recommended mounting methods, dimensions and case size tables, and rated operating conditions.
  • Ratings and characteristics: required fields for rated capacitance range, tolerance, rated and category voltages, climatic and temperature ratings, and reference characteristics (capacitance vs. temperature, tan δ, leakage current, ESR, surge voltage).
  • Marking and ordering information: required marking rules and minimum order/packaging data elements.
  • Inspection and test schedules: templates for qualification approval and lot-by-lot quality conformance inspection (including Group A, B, C tests).
  • Test types referenced: leakage current, capacitance, tangent of loss angle (tan δ), equivalent series resistance (ESR), high surge current (if applicable), solderability, resistance to soldering heat, substrate bending, mounting/visual/dimensional inspections.

Practical applications and users

This blank detail specification is primarily used by:

  • Component manufacturers drafting product detail specifications for surface-mount tantalum polymer capacitors to ensure IEC-conformant documentation.
  • Quality and compliance engineers at OEMs and CEMs who evaluate vendor specifications and require IEC-aligned detail specifications for procurement.
  • Test laboratories and qualification teams implementing the prescribed inspection schedules and acceptance criteria.
  • Standards committees and national bodies adapting or issuing national detail specifications consistent with IEC structure and content.

Using IEC 60384-24-1 helps ensure consistent documentation, traceability and clear quality conformance criteria for surface mount tantalum electrolytic capacitors with conductive polymer-supporting reliable component selection and regulatory alignment.
