Overview
CISPR 20:2002/AMD2:2004 is an important amendment published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that enhances standards related to the immunity characteristics of sound and television broadcast receivers and associated equipment. This amendment particularly focuses on objective picture quality evaluation methods for immunity measurements concerning both analog and digital broadcast receivers. It introduces alternative and objective procedures to assess picture quality, ensuring consistency and improved correlation with subjective evaluation techniques.
Key Topics
Objective Picture Quality Evaluation
Amendment 2 adds information on using objective measurement methods to evaluate picture quality during electromagnetic immunity tests. This approach supports analogue and digital broadcast receivers and offers reliable alternatives that correlate closely with subjective human observations.Immunity Characteristics and Limits
The amendment retains and clarifies limits and methods of measurement for immunity to radio frequency disturbances, detailing how broadcast receivers should resist electromagnetic interference without significant picture or sound degradation.Measurement Procedures
It outlines practical measurement procedures including setups using video camera systems or direct video signal outputs from devices under test (EUT) both with and without displays. The methodology emphasizes minimising geometric distortion, ensuring optical axis alignment, and using fibre optic transmission for minimal electromagnetic interference (EMI).Evaluation Criteria
The amendment defines analogue degradations such as moiré patterns, luminance loss, and synchronization loss, as well as digital degradations like blocking, frozen images, and unrecoverable data stream errors. Acceptable degradation is defined within specific decibel ranges relative to subjective average measurements.Annex K – Objective Picture Evaluation
This informative annex introduces a reference comparison technique leveraging video cameras and image processing algorithms to quantify picture degradation. The method calculates deviations from a recorded reference image captured under interference-free conditions, providing reproducible and objective results.
Applications
Broadcast Receiver Design & Testing
Manufacturers and test laboratories can apply the methods in this amendment to validate and certify the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) immunity of sound and television broadcast receivers during development and production.Quality Assurance in Multimedia Equipment
The objective picture quality evaluation helps engineers precisely quantify the immunity performance of multimedia receivers and associated equipment, optimizing product robustness against RF disturbances.Standardization and Compliance
Regulatory bodies and certification agencies can use these measurement and evaluation methods to create compliant testing protocols that improve uniformity and repeatability in EMC testing for broadcast devices.Improving Consumer Experience
By adopting objective evaluation techniques alongside conventional subjective ones, product developers can reduce picture degradation in receiver devices, leading to enhanced end-user viewing experiences.
Related Standards
CISPR 29:2004
Provides techniques specifically for objective picture assessment of television broadcast receivers and complements CISPR 20 Amendment 2 by detailing measurement methodologies for immunity characteristics.IEC EMC Standards
Encompassing electromagnetic compatibility standards that address information technology, multimedia, and broadcast equipment immunity requirements.Broadcast Equipment Immunity Standards

Annexe K
(informative)
Évaluation objective de la qualité d’image
K.1 Introduction
de mesure subjectif moyen;
– détection des dégradations numériques dans une gamme de ±2 dB par rapport au résultat
de mesure subjectif moyen;
– reproductibilité dans une gamme de 2 dB.
Le résultat de mesure subjectif moyen est défini comme la valeur moyenne des résultats de
mesure subjectifs d’au moins 5 opérateurs expérimentés différents.

Annex K
(informative)
Objective evaluation of picture quality
K.1 Introduction
This annex gives information concerning the method of objective picture evaluation for the
immunity measurements of analogue and digital broadcast receivers and associated
equipment.
The method of objective picture evaluation uses the same unwanted and wanted signal
requirements as defined in Clause 5 of CISPR 20. It can be introduced as an alternative
method for the evaluation of picture quality with the benefit of a direct correlation with the
subjective method.
Correlation with the subjective method is given, when the objective method fulfils the following
demands:
– detection of analogue degradations within a range of ±6 dB related to the average
subjective measurement result;
– detection of digital degradations within a range of ±2 dB related to the average subjective
measurement result;
– reproducibility in a range of 2 dB.
The average subjective measurement result is defined as the average value of the subjective
measurement results from at least 5 different experienced operators.
