Overview
EN 4385:2022, titled Aerospace series - Non-metallic materials - General organization of standardization - Links between types of standards, is a European Standard published by CEN and prepared by ASD-STAN. This standard specifies the overall framework and organization of the EN standards dedicated to non-metallic materials used in aerospace applications. It defines the hierarchical structure and interconnections between different types or levels of standards, facilitating their coherent drafting, presentation, and application within the aerospace industry.
Being classified as a level 0 or General Standard, EN 4385:2022 is foundational for understanding how various standards for non-metallic aerospace materials relate and support each other. It ensures a systematic approach to standardization that enhances consistency, clarity, and usability across related documents.
Key Topics
Hierarchy of Standards
EN 4385:2022 outlines five distinct levels of standards ranging from 0 to 4, each serving specific roles:- Level 0: General standards providing organizational guidance (e.g., EN 4385 itself).
- Level 1: Basic standards addressing conditions and procedures applicable widely, such as facilities, personnel, or test fluids (e.g., EN 2379 for standard test fluids).
- Level 2: Standards specifying drafting and presentation rules for subsequent detailed standards (e.g., TR 7000-1).
- Level 3: Semi-finished product definition standards, including material standards, test methods, and technical specifications detailing manufacturing and quality assurance.
- Level 4: Supplementary standards developed by users for additional product definitions or quality assurance.
Relationships Between Standards
EN 4385 establishes essential connections such as:- Basic standards (Level 1) serve as mandatory reference sources for product definition standards (Level 3).
- Material standards (Level 3) are the primary contracts between manufacturers and purchasers and override conflicting lower-level documents.
- Test method standards and technical specifications link closely and inform material standards.
- Supplementary standards (Level 4) are user-developed extensions to complete quality assurance frameworks.
Standardization Rules and Consistency
The document emphasizes the importance of adhering to uniform drafting and presentation rules (Level 2) to ensure consistent communication, transparency, and implementation across aerospace non-metallic material standards.
Applications
EN 4385:2022 is critical for aerospace manufacturers, suppliers, and quality assurance professionals dealing with non-metallic materials used in aircraft and aerospace structures. The standard:
- Provides a clear framework for developing and applying standards, enhancing interoperability between different documents and systems.
- Enables streamlined communication between stakeholders through consistent terminology and defined relationships across standards.
- Supports compliance and certification efforts by clarifying applicable documents and their hierarchical significance.
- Ensures quality assurance programs are built on standardized references, improving reliability and safety outcomes in aerospace projects.
- Facilitates material specification development, testing protocols, and product acceptance criteria development aligned with recognized aerospace standards.
Related Standards
EN 4385:2022 references and links with several key aerospace non-metallic material standards, including:
- EN 2379 - Test fluids for non-metallic materials assessment (Basic Standard Level 1)
- EN 2744 - Preferred test temperatures for non-metallic materials (Level 1)
- TR 7000-1 - General drafting and presentation rules for material standards (Level 2)
- TR 4386 - Drafting rules for test method standards (Level 2)
- EN 4387 - Rules for technical specifications drafting (Level 2)
- EN 2435-002 - Corrosion resistant primer specification (Material Standard Level 3)
- EN 2642 - Structural adhesive systems specification (Technical Specification Level 3)
- EN 2155-3 - Refractive index test method (Test Method Standard Level 3)
By using EN 4385:2022 as a guiding framework, aerospace organizations can effectively navigate and implement the entire suite of non-metallic material standards, ensuring regulatory alignment and high standards of quality for aerospace applications.

Introduction
For the purpose of standardization of non-metallic materials, ASD-STAN originally permitted the
different families of non-metallic materials to be treated in isolation to each other. Consequently, there
was no standardized approach for drafting and presentation of the different families of non-metallic
materials.
In order to introduce a coherent system, a number of standards defining the rules to be followed in
