Overview
EN 1073-2:2002 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements and test methods for non-ventilated protective clothing designed to protect the wearer against particulate radioactive contamination. This standard focuses on clothing intended to shield the body, arms, and legs from contamination by radioactive particles. It excludes protection against ionizing radiation and contamination protection for patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic radioactive procedures.
The standard is crucial for industries and environments where workers are exposed to radioactive particles but do not require full respiratory protection or ventilated suits.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
- Protects only the body, arms, and legs; additional accessories (e.g., gloves, boots, respiratory protective equipment) protect other body parts as specified in other standards.
- Non-ventilated, meaning the suit is not supplied with clean air and does not maintain positive pressure inside.
- Applicable to both single-use and reusable protective clothing.
Design Requirements
- The clothing must be easy to put on and remove to minimize contamination risk.
- Must reduce physiological stress on the wearer.
- Can be a single garment or a combination designed to be worn with accessories.
- Tested with accessories fitted, according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Material Criteria
- Materials must have high abrasion resistance, puncture resistance, tear resistance, and resistance to ignition.
- Materials undergo conditioning and testing to simulate actual use and cleaning cycles for reusable suits.
- Standard classifies materials and garments according to test results (abrasion cycles, puncture force, tear force, etc.).
Protection Performance
- Measured by the Nominal Protection Factor (NPF), which is the ratio of ambient particle concentration to particle concentration inside the suit.
- Total Inward Leakage (TIL) is quantified to classify protective performance.
- Classification ensures a minimum protection level (class 1 or above).
Seam and Joins Strength
- Seam strength and integrity are critical to prevent particulate ingress.
- Specific seam strength thresholds classify the garment.

The EN 1073-2:2002 standard provides a comprehensive framework for non-ventilated protective clothing designed to guard against particulate radioactive contamination. Its primary scope is to delineate the specific requirements and test methods necessary to ensure that protective garments effectively shield the wearer’s body, arms, and legs from harmful radioactive particles. The precision of this standard is crucial as it ensures that manufacturers adhere to stringent guidelines that enhance the safety of personnel in environments exposed to radioactive materials. One of the standout strengths of EN 1073-2:2002 is its detailed approach to testing methodologies. By establishing robust testing parameters, the standard facilitates the consistent evaluation of protective clothing performance. This helps in determining the effectiveness of various materials and designs in preventing radioactive contamination, thereby contributing significantly to workplace safety. Moreover, the standard is highly relevant in industries that deal with radioactive substances, as it emphasizes the importance of protective clothing in mitigating health risks associated with particulate contamination. It also clarifies that while the clothing primarily protects the wearer's body, it can be supplemented with accessories like boots, gloves, and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) for comprehensive coverage. This modular approach promotes the development of tailored protective solutions while aligning with other existing European standards that govern the protection of additional body areas. It should be noted, however, that EN 1073-2:2002 explicitly excludes considerations for protection against ionizing radiation and does not cover protective measures for patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic interventions involving radioactive substances. This focused scope enhances its applicability specifically for workers in relevant environments rather than extending its provisions to medical scenarios, thereby reducing potential ambiguities. Overall, EN 1073-2:2002 stands out as a vital standard in the field of occupational safety, ensuring that protective clothing against radioactive contamination meets established benchmarks for efficacy and reliability, thereby fostering a safer working environment in industries handling radioactive materials.
