Overview
EN 10278:2023 - published by CEN - defines dimensions and tolerances for bright steel products (drawn, turned or ground) delivered in straight lengths. It is primarily aimed at stainless steels (referencing EN 10088-3) and other special steels used as bright bars and wire (e.g., tool steels, roller bearing steels). The standard replaces EN 10278:1999 and clarifies surface condition, tolerance classes, straightness evaluation and delivery/inspection requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and exclusions
- Applies to bright products delivered in straight lengths in drawn, turned or ground condition.
- Includes cold heading steels (bars and wire - for wire thickness/tolerances apply but not length/straightness).
- Excludes cold rolled products, cut lengths from strip/sheet, and the non-alloy/alloy steels previously covered by EN 10277.
- Tolerance and surface classes
- Tolerances referenced to ISO 286-2 (tolerance classes h6–h12 are used).
- Surface/finish classes (examples: 2H, 2B, 2G, 2P) determine default tolerance class and surface condition at delivery.
- Separate tables provide tolerances for rounds, squares, hexagons and drawn flats (thickness, width and ovality limits).
- Straightness and length
- Straightness tolerances are specified and may be required by purchaser; methods for evaluating straightness are given in Annex A.
- Types of length (manufacturing/stock/cut-to-length) and length tolerances are defined, including allowances for short bars.
- Ordering and inspection
- Purchaser must supply mandatory info: quantity, shape, EN 10278 reference, nominal dimensions and tolerances, material standard and steel grade, finished condition, and surface quality class where applicable.
- Options include straightness requirements, bar-end condition, disposition of tolerances (positive or centred), and inspection document type (EN 10204/ISO 10474).
- Visual and dimensional inspection rules and sample locations are specified.
Applications and users
- Who uses EN 10278:2023:
- Steel manufacturers and mill product planners producing bright bars and wire
- Buyers, procurement teams and specification writers creating purchase orders
- Quality engineers and inspectors checking dimensional compliance, straightness and surface class
- Machine shops, fastener/cold-heading suppliers, bearing and tool-steel component makers who require precise tolerances

The standard EN 10278:2023 focuses on the dimensions and tolerances of bright steel products made from stainless and other special steels, including those produced in drawn, turned, or ground conditions. This extensive scope ensures that industries relying on bright steel products have clear guidelines on delivery in straight lengths, which is crucial for maintaining consistency and quality across manufacturing processes. One of the strengths of EN 10278:2023 is its comprehensive application for stainless steels as specified in EN 10088-3, as well as for other product standards such as tool steels and roller bearing steels. This inclusivity allows for a unified approach in specifying not just traditional stainless steels but also special steels that are fundamental in various engineering applications. Furthermore, the inclusion of cold heading steels, in the form of bars and wire, is particularly beneficial, granting manufacturers the flexibility to ensure that the thickness and tolerances are met while acknowledging certain limitations regarding length and straightness in wire applications. The exclusion of non-alloy and alloy steels previously covered under EN 10277 refines the focus of the standard, allowing stakeholders to zero in on the specific requirements applicable to bright steel products. Additionally, by not encompassing cold rolled products and cut lengths from strips or sheets, the standard distinctly delineates its scope, helping prevent ambiguity in application. Overall, EN 10278:2023 serves as a vital document for manufacturers and stakeholders in the steel industry, providing a clear set of dimensions and tolerances that respond to the needs of modern production while ensuring compliance with quality standards. Its relevance in ensuring precise specifications cannot be overstated, as it contributes significantly to the reliability and performance of finalized products in various industrial applications.
