Standardization of properties of stainless steels and cobalt and nickel base alloys, and their product dimensions, tolerances and technical delivery conditions. Those steels and alloys are mainly used in the engineering, construction, chemical and automotive industries. It includes grades that are defined by their resistance to corrosive environments at ambient and increased temperatures up to 550 °C, or by their creep resistance above 500 °C, or by their resistance to the effect of hot gases and products of combustion at temperatures of above 550 °C. The scope does not cover the standardization of special applications, such as pressure purposes concrete reinforcement medical oil and gas aerospace tubes and hollow sections and hollow bars forgings and castings.

General Information
This document specifies the technical delivery conditions for semi-finished products, hot or cold formed bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products of standard grades and special grades of corrosion resistant stainless steels for general purposes.
NOTE General purposes include the use of stainless steels in contact with foodstuffs.
The general technical delivery conditions specified in EN 10021 apply in addition to the specifications of this document, unless otherwise specified in this document.
This document does not apply to components manufactured by further processing of the product forms listed above with quality characteristics altered as a result of such further processing.

This document applies to bright steel products in the drawn, turned or ground condition delivered in straight lengths. This document is mainly applied to stainless steels of EN 10088-3 and other product standards, e.g. tool steels, roller bearing steels.
This document can also be used for cold heading steels in the form of bars and wire; in case of wire, the thickness and tolerances apply but not the length and the straightness.
The non-alloy and alloy steels of EN 10277 are no longer included.
This document does not cover cold rolled products and cut lengths produced from strip or sheet by cutting.

ISO 18286:2008 specifies requirements for tolerances for hot-rolled stainless steel plates (quarto plates) made on a reversing mill with the following characteristics: nominal thickness, t, from 4 mm to 250 mm; and nominal width, w, equal to or greater than 600 mm.
Tolerances for plate of width w less than 600 mm cut or slit from wider plate should be agreed upon between manufacturer and purchaser at the time of enquiry and order.
ISO 18286:2008 is not applicable to round plates, custom-made plates, checker plate or bulb plate for flooring or wide flats, nor to continuous-process plates (plate made with coiling).
