Overview

EN 4532:2009 is a CEN aerospace technical specification for single‑core optical cables with a 200 µm core / 280 µm cladding fibre and a 2.5 mm outer jacket. The standard defines two cable types:

  • Type A (jacketed fibre) - for printed circuit board inter‑connection inside equipment.
  • Type B (single core cable) - for general airframe and equipment inter‑connection (all aircraft locations except power plant compartments).

The standard targets aerospace and defence applications requiring long‑lived, radiation‑tolerant multimode fibre with defined mechanical, optical and environmental performance.

Key topics and requirements

EN 4532:2009 specifies construction, performance and production acceptance tests. Key technical highlights include:

  • Fibre construction

    • Step‑index, multimode, all‑silica core with suitably doped silica cladding.
    • High OH content in core for nuclear radiation hardening.
  • Geometrical and optical data

    • Nominal core/cladding dimensions: 200 ± 3 µm / 278 ± 2 µm.
    • Refractive index difference ~ (20 ± 1.2) × 10⁻³ at 633 nm; theoretical NA ≈ 0.24 ± 0.01.
    • Fibre attenuation (full‑launch): ≤ 15 dB/km (specified test methods).
  • Cable construction (Type B)

    • Tight buffer, all‑dielectric with strength members and outer sheath.
    • Outer sheath colour: light violet; outer diameter 2.5 ± 0.15 mm; minimum wall thickness 0.2 mm.
  • Environmental & mechanical

    • Operating temperature: −60 °C to 150 °C.
    • Operating pressure: 2 000 mbar to 11 mbar.
    • Humidity and storage limits defined; useful installed lifetime ≥ 25 years.
    • Bend radii: ≥ 12 mm during installation, 30 mm long‑term; limited use of tighter bends (max 200 mm total per light path).
    • Nuclear radiation induced attenuation limits: ≤ 15 dB/km at 24 °C and ≤ 82 dB/km at −60 °C (after 1 ms).
  • Production and acceptance testing

    • Routine tests for core/cladding geometry, proof test (≥ 65 N), attenuation, temperature cycling and more (referenced EN/IEC test methods).

Applications and users

EN 4532 is intended for:

  • Aircraft OEMs and suppliers specifying aerospace optical cable for avionics and communication links.
  • Harness designers, installation engineers and maintenance teams requiring certified airframe interconnection cables.
  • Defence programmes needing radiation‑hardened multimode fibre.
  • Cable manufacturers and test labs performing qualification, production acceptance and supplier declarations.
