Overview

EN 3733-001:2009 is a CEN aerospace series technical specification for circular, single-channel fibre‑optic connectors with a self‑locking (threaded) coupling ring, designed for continuous operation up to 150 °C. The standard defines general characteristics, materials, design features, qualification and acceptance conditions, quality assurance requirements, and the test programs required for aerospace applications.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Connector type: Circular, single‑channel optical connector coupled by a self‑locking (threaded) ring; thread‑coupled with a knurled coupling ring and anti‑vibration / anti‑unmating features.
  • Temperature rating: Continuous operation up to 150 °C; includes endurance testing at 150 °C for 1 000 hours.
  • Environmental sealing: Connectors are environmentally sealed to the levels specified in the standard’s test matrix (see Table 2 in the document).
  • Mechanical design:
    • Five‑key polarization system (five keys on plug / five key‑ways on receptacle).
    • Split alignment sleeve, spring‑loaded ferrule in plug.
    • Cable strain relief secured to connector housing; protective covers and terminator covers available.
  • Materials:
    • Housings: lightweight, corrosion‑resistant metals (e.g., passivated stainless steel, nickel‑copper alloys as per product standards).
    • Ferrules: ceramic (zirconia or alumina), corrosion‑resisting steel, or other approved materials.
    • Seals/boots: specified to suit intended use and fluid resistance requirements.
  • Test program:
    • Implements tests from EN 2591‑100 with aerospace‑specific details: visual inspection, dimensional checks, climatic sequences, rapid temperature change, salt mist, sand/dust, immersion at low pressure, fluid resistance (Class A/B fluids), ozone, flammability, and special high‑level vibration tests (e.g., gunfire).
  • Quality assurance & qualification:
    • Qualification, maintenance of qualification, acceptance and sampling plans outlined; cross‑references to EN 9133 (qualification procedure) and EN 3197 (installation guidance).

Applications and users

EN 3733‑001:2009 targets components used in:

  • Aircraft and spacecraft optical interconnects where high temperature and rugged environmental performance are required.
  • Typical users: aerospace OEMs, connector manufacturers, systems integrators, avionics and harness designers, environmental/test laboratories, and procurement/qualification engineers responsible for component selection and certification.
