Overview
EN 2591-609:2005 is a CEN/AECMA aerospace test standard that defines procedures for assessing the effectiveness of cable attachment under cyclic flexing for optical connection elements, including permanent connections and fibre-optic couplers. It is intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 (General) and complements optical performance tests such as insertion loss and attenuation variation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Three test methods (A, B, C): The standard specifies Method A (rotational flexing with free-running cable), Method B (rotational flexing under tensile force), and Method C (pendulum flexing with defined pendulum length and weight).
- Default cycle count: 100 cycles, unless the product specification cites a different number.
- Bend radius and dimensions: Minimum admissible radius R = 6 × cable diameter (but not less than 20 mm). Dimension L1 = 3 × cable diameter (but not less than 20 mm).
- Method-specific details:
- Method A: Rotate the specimen 180° and back to define one cycle; cable runs freely in a guide; monitor attenuation variation throughout the test (see EN 2591-602).
- Method B: Mount plug or receptacle, apply specified tensile force, rotate the element continuously at 10–20 rpm; apparatus must maintain minimum bend radius.
- Method C: Use a pendulum flex (90°, −180°, 90°) with a tensile weight; record optical readings in the rest (vertical) position every five cycles.
- Measurements and pass/fail checks: Visual examination (EN 2591-6101) and insertion loss checks (EN 2591-601). During Method B the cable must not become dislodged; attenuation variation must remain within product-standard limits.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses this standard: aerospace manufacturers, connector and cable designers, qualification and test laboratories, quality assurance teams, and procurement engineers specifying connector reliability.
- When to use it: during product qualification, design validation, supplier acceptance testing, and failure investigation to verify that cable attachment and strain relief for optical connectors withstand repeated flexing.
- Why it matters: ensures long-term optical performance and mechanical retention of fibre connections in vibration, harness routing, and maintenance scenarios typical of aerospace environments.
