Overview

EN 3745-512:2005 - Aerospace series: Fibres and cables, optical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 512: Flexure endurance. Published by CEN and approved 19 September 2005, this standard specifies a reproducible method for assessing the flexure endurance of optical cables used in aircraft when subjected to alternating flexing. The test evaluates durability and stability of optical attenuation under repeated bending cycles.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Endurance testing of aircraft optical cables under alternating flexure to quantify change in attenuation and detect damage.
  • Specimen preparation: As per EN 3745-100. Default specimen length is 1 m; default test mass M = 300 g. Test parameters that must be specified (if different from defaults) include specimen type, number of specimens, length, mass M, mandrel diameter D, static bend radius, allowable attenuation variation, and number of cycles.
  • Apparatus:
    • Light Launch System (LLS) and Light Detector System (LDS) as defined in EN 2591-100.
    • Test fixture with mandrels and rotating centre of rotation; spacing between mandrels = maximum cable diameter.
    • Counter to record cycles.
  • Motion and speed: Rotation at a uniform rate of (18 ± 2) cycles/min with cable vertical. One cycle = 90° left → return vertical → 90° right → return vertical.
  • Test procedure:
    • Install specimen, apply specified load M, perform preliminary run to avoid resonance, connect LLS/LDS, zero the LDS (reference), reset counter, run the specified number of cycles.
    • Monitor attenuation continuously in accordance with EN 3745-301 (method C).
  • Acceptance criteria:
    • Visual inspection per EN 3745-201.
    • Change in attenuation must be less than the specified maximum permissible value defined for the product.

Applications and users

  • Intended for aerospace cable manufacturers, optical-fibre harness designers, test laboratories, certification bodies and procurement/specification engineers.
  • Practical uses:
    • Qualification of aircraft optical cables for use in moving or vibration-prone locations (control surfaces, rotating joints, harness flex points).
    • Verifying long-term attenuation stability under repeated bending.
    • Supporting design decisions for mandrel sizing, bend radii and mechanical load limits.
    • Compliance evidence for aerospace procurement and certification.
