Overview

EN 3745-100:2008 - Aerospace series - Fibres and cables, optical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 100: General is the general/terminology part of the EN 3745 series published by CEN (prepared by ASD‑STAN). Its primary purpose is to define the terms and basic test conditions used throughout the EN 3745 family of test methods for optical fibres and optical cables intended for aircraft and aerospace applications.

Key SEO keywords: EN 3745-100:2008, optical fibre, optical cable, aerospace test methods, aircraft optical fibres, terminology.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Specifies and defines essential terms for optical fibres and optical cables used in avionics and aerospace systems.
  • Core terms defined: optical fibre, core, cladding, fibre coating, buffer, optical cable, multiple fibre cable, strength members, jacket, refractive index profile, core/cladding diameters, concentricity error, non‑circularity, attenuation, numerical aperture, bandwidth, etc.
  • Refractive index profile: Presents the profile parameter (g) categories (step, graded, quasi step) and the basic mathematical form used to describe index distribution (informative).
  • Optical parameters: Definitions and formulas for attenuation, attenuation coefficient, numerical aperture (NA) and bandwidth are included to ensure consistent interpretation across test methods.
  • Standard test conditions: Default laboratory conditions for tests unless otherwise stated:
    • Temperature: 20 ± 5 °C
    • Atmospheric pressure: 86 kPa to 106 kPa
    • Relative humidity: 45% to 75%
  • List of test methods (series structure): Part 100 lists the EN 3745 parts and their designations so users can find detailed methods, including:
    • Optical tests: attenuation, numerical aperture, bandwidth, immunity to ambient light coupling, variation of attenuation during temperature cycling
    • Environmental tests: accelerated ageing, temperature cycling, thermal shock, flammability, resistance to fluids, humidity
    • Mechanical tests: fibre proof test, tensile strength, abrasion, micro‑bending, cable tensile, impact, torsion, kink, bending, crush
    • Sundry: smoke density, toxicity, nuclear radiation
    • Handling tests: strippability, marking durability, contrast measurement

Applications and users

  • Intended for aerospace and aviation manufacturers, avionics engineers, cable designers, material suppliers, test laboratories, procurement/specification writers and certification authorities.
  • Used to ensure consistent terminology, prepare product specifications, interpret detailed EN 3745 test methods (Parts 201–705), and support compliance/certification of aircraft optical wiring systems.

Related standards

  • Normative reference: IEC 50(731) - International Electrotechnical Vocabulary, Chapter 731: Optical fibre communication.
  • EN 3745-100:2008 is the general/terminology part of the broader EN 3745 series (detailed parts cover specific test procedures).

For product specification or test planning, use EN 3745-100:2008 to align terminology and test conditions before applying the specific EN 3745 test parts.
