Overview

EN 1999-1-2:2023/prA1 (Eurocode 9 - Design of Aluminium Structures – Part 1-2: Structural Fire Design), developed by CEN, specifies requirements and methods for the structural fire design of aluminium load-bearing structures. This standard is intended to be used together with other parts of Eurocode 9 and the broader set of Eurocodes. EN 1999-1-2 focuses on the changes and additional provisions necessary for aluminium structures under fire exposure, compared to design at normal temperatures.

The standard provides principles, rules, and assumptions for verifying the fire resistance performance of aluminium structures, addressing only those aspects that differ from the normal temperature design. It also outlines the applicable material grades and the interface with execution and conformity assessment requirements.

Key Topics

  • Fire Design Principles for Aluminium Structures: EN 1999-1-2 details the design procedures required to ensure the stability and load-bearing performance of aluminium structures during accidental fire scenarios.
  • Applicable Aluminium Alloys: The standard covers specific alloys and tempers frequently used in construction, such as EN AW-3004, EN AW-5083, EN AW-6063, EN AW-5052, EN AW-5454, EN AW-5005, EN AW-6061, and EN AW-6082, and allows extension to others if material properties at elevated temperatures are reliably known.
  • Design Fire Scenarios: Guidance is given on the selection of fire scenarios, with responsibility resting on competent personnel or national regulations.
  • Integration with Other Standards: EN 1999-1-2 is designed to be used alongside Eurocode 9 Part 1-1 (general structural rules), relevant execution standards (e.g., EN 1090-1 and EN 1090-3), and other Eurocodes concerning actions on structures and product requirements.
  • Material Properties at Elevated Temperatures: The document addresses the determination and calculation of aluminium’s strength and stiffness when exposed to fire, considering their reduction at higher temperatures.
  • Fire Protection Systems: Assumptions for the effectiveness and maintenance of active and passive fire protection systems are incorporated into the design approach.

Applications

EN 1999-1-2:2023/prA1 is essential for:

  • Structural Fire Engineering: Used by engineers and designers assessing the fire resistance of aluminium buildings, bridges, façades, and other structural applications.
  • Building Safety Compliance: Supports compliance with European fire safety regulations and national annexes, ensuring structures fulfill required fire resistance periods.
  • Conformity Assessment: Assists manufacturers, contractors, and assessors in meeting conformity requirements for aluminium structural components under execution standards.
  • Material Specification: Guides the selection of appropriate alloy grades and the application of validated material properties for fire design.
  • Advanced Structural Analysis: Relied upon for both tabulated (simplified) and advanced design methods, using validated data and mechanical analysis as per Annexes in the standard.
  • Retrofit and Adaptation: Used in both the design of new structures and the safety evaluation or upgrading of existing aluminium buildings for improved fire performance.
