ISO/IEC 1001:2012 specifies the file structure and the labelling of magnetic tapes for the interchange of information between users of information processing systems. It specifies volume and file structure, basic characteristics of the blocks containing the records constituting the file, recorded labels for identifying files, file sections and volumes of magnetic tapes, and four nested levels of interchange. ISO/IEC 1001:2012 also specifies requirements for the processes which are provided within information processing systems, to enable information to be interchanged between different systems, utilizing recorded magnetic tape as the medium of interchange. For this purpose it specifies the functions to be provided within systems which are intended to originate or receive magnetic tape volumes which conform to it.

ISO/IEC 23651:2003 specifies the physical and magnetic characteristics of an 8 mm wide magnetic tape cartridge containing a memory chip to enable physical interchange of such cartridges between drives. It also specifies the quality of the recorded signals, the recording method and the recorded format - called Advanced Intelligent Tape No. 3 (AIT-3 format) - thereby allowing data interchange between drives by means of such magnetic tape cartridges. ISO/IEC 23651:2003 specifies two types of cartridge depending on the thickness of the magnetic tape contained in the case. Information interchange between systems also requires, at a minimum, agreement between the interchange parties upon the interchange code(s) and the specifications of the structure and labelling of the information on the interchanged cartridge.

This part of ISO/IEC 8441 specifies requirements for unrecorded magnetic tape designed for high density digital recording (HDDR) having the following characteristics: a) nominal thickness 25,4 urn (0,001 in); b) longitudinal magnetic orientation; c) coercivity 72 kA/m (900 Oe) max. These tapes are suitable for interchange in accordance with ISO/IEC 8441-2. Requirements for packaging are also included. NOTE 1 Tapes of coercivity above 32 kA/m (400 Oe) are usually classified as high energy tapes and users should establish compatibility with equipment used for driving them. Annex A gives guidance on glass and metal-flanged reels. Annex B gives information on the wear of recording heads. Different categories of environmental conditions and their effects on tape are dealt with in annex C. Severe operating conditions are considered in annex D. Surface electrical resistance testing is dealt with in annex E. A tape abrasivity testing technique is described in annex F. A list of bibliographical references is given in annex G. NOTES 2 It is recognized that archival interchange tapes, or those produced by systems in use prior to the publication of this part of ISO/lEC 8441, may not comply with the requirements and/or recommendations herein. 3 Various tests and procedures herein refer to recording with a.c. HF bias. In practice, certain HDDR systems do not use bias. The use of bias in this part of ISO/IEC 8441 does not imply that the tape so tested is in any way unsuitable for a biasless system.

ISO 18933:2006 concerns the care and handling of magnetic recording tape during use. It addresses the issues of physical integrity of the medium necessary to preserve access to the data (information) recorded on the tape. ISO 18933:2006 recommends handling procedures to maximize the effective life of magnetic tape. While some of the recommendations in ISO 18933:2006, such as staff training, apply specifically to large-scale or archival usage, the basics of all recommendations in this International Standard can and should be applied in all circumstances where the desired result is long-term usage of the medium whether archival, commercial or personal. ISO 18933:2006 addresses the following subjects: handling techniques, including common hazards and methods to mitigate those hazards; handling environments, including pollutants, temperature and humidity, lighting, magnetic fields and robotics; use of tape, including inspection, playback, mounting/loading and removing, winding speed, tension and robotic systems; cleaning and maintenance techniques, including contaminants, cleaning methods and frequency; transportation, both in-house and shipping outside the storage facility; disasters, including water, fire, construction and post-disaster procedures; staff training, including schedule for training and contents of the training programme; archival issues.
