Overview
EN 1175-1:1998/FprA1 (CEN) updates the electrical safety requirements for battery-powered industrial trucks. This final draft amendment clarifies general electrical provisions, adds requirements for electromagnetic emissions and non‑ionising radiation, and updates references to modern ISO standards and EMC requirements. The amendment supports conformity with EU machinery directives and includes informative Annex ZB relating to Directive 2006/42/EC.
Key Topics
- Scope and references: Replaces older EN references with EN ISO 12100-1:2003, EN ISO 12100-2:2003 and EN ISO 13849-1:2008 for basic safety concepts and safety-related control systems.
- Parameter safety (5.9.11): New clause requires that uncontrolled or operator-controlled parameter changes must not create hazardous conditions; systems must ensure safe operation after any parameter change.
- Emergency switching off (5.13): Clarified requirements for manual emergency switches and the deactivation of electronic power switching circuits; additional requirements for series-wound DC motor applications.
- Electromagnetic radiations (5.16 & 7.5):
- Non-ionising radiation (5.16.1 & 7.5): When trucks are fitted with radio transmitters, RFID readers or similar devices, radiation should be minimised and warnings provided in manuals and on signage for people with implantable medical devices.
- EMC (5.16.2): Functional emissions and immunity shall meet EN 12895:2000 limits for industrial trucks.
- Battery and charging (7.3): Instruction handbook must include guidance on charging areas and ventilation with reference to EN 50272-3. Note warns of hydrogen evolution during charging and the 4% hydrogen lower explosion limit.
- Annex ZB: Adds a table correlating clauses of EN 1175-1 with essential requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC to support presumption of conformity when implemented.
Applications
This amendment is practical for:
- Manufacturers updating design and documentation for battery-powered forklifts, pallet trucks and similar industrial vehicles.
- Compliance teams aligning product requirements with EU machinery directives and EMC rules.
- Safety engineers implementing control-system safeguards for parameter changes, emergency stop logic, and electromagnetic compatibility.
Practical benefits include clearer operator warnings for radiation-sensitive persons, defined expectations for battery charging ventilation, and harmonised use of modern ISO standards for control-system safety assessments.
Related Standards
- EN ISO 12100-1:2003 / EN ISO 12100-2:2003 - basic safety concepts and technical principles
- EN ISO 13849-1:2008 - safety-related parts of control systems
- EN 12895:2000 - electromagnetic compatibility for industrial trucks
- EN 50272-3 - guidance on battery charging ventilation and safety
For manufacturers and conformity assessors, EN 1175-1:1998/FprA1 is a key reference to ensure safe electrical design, control integrity and compliance with EU machinery requirements for battery-powered trucks.
