Overview

EN 13880-6:2019 - part of the CEN series for hot applied joint sealants - specifies a laboratory method for the preparation, heating and pouring of representative test samples intended for testing sealants used in joints in concrete pavements (roads, airfields and other trafficked areas). The standard defines how to obtain a representative composite sample, how to heat it uniformly to the manufacturer’s safe heating temperature, and how to produce test specimens for subsequent physical and performance testing.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Preparation of test samples, heating and pouring of specimens for hot applied joint sealants used in concrete pavement joints.
  • Sample definition: A “sample” is one or more original containers totalling at least 10 kg; spot samples are 20–100 g vertical straight‑through cuts; composite samples are 0.5–2 kg made by mixing spot samples.
  • Heating protocol:
    • Heat composite sample to the manufacturer-declared safe heating temperature.
    • Heat-up period: reach temperature within 1.5 h; the measured heating time starts when the sealant reaches safe temp − 5 °C.
    • Hold at safe heating temperature for 4 h ± 10 min (changed from 6 h in the previous edition).
    • Apparatus temperature must not exceed safe temp + 5 °C.
  • Apparatus: Any heating equipment that provides uniform heat transfer is allowed (oil bath, air heat chamber or direct electrical heater). If using an oil bath, oil must have a flash point ≥ 285 °C. Inner containers: metal (≈1 mm thick), glass or ceramic, 100–200 mm diameter and depth.
  • Instrumentation: Thermometer accuracy ±1 °C for the 100–220 °C range; stirrer to homogenize the molten sealant.
  • Pouring and finishing: Pour specimens promptly after heating; avoid oil contamination from oil baths; remove small air bubbles with a pilot flame or hot glass rod if necessary.
  • Test report: Must record sample ID, source, batch/manufacture date, quantity/packaging/damage, preparation date, laboratory name, safe heating temperature, end-of-pour temperature and heating method.

Applications and users

  • Laboratories performing standardized testing of hot applied joint sealants.
  • Sealant manufacturers and quality control teams for product conformity.
  • Road/airfield contractors and material specifiers who require validated test specimens.
  • National standards bodies and accreditation entities assessing compliance with EN test methods.

Related standards
