Overview

EN 13880-7:2019 - "Hot applied joint sealants - Part 7: Function testing of joint sealants" is a CEN standard that specifies an accelerated function test for hot-applied joint sealants. It is intended for materials used where joints are exposed to low-temperature service conditions (≤ −20 °C) and significant joint movement (up to 35 %) in construction joints and spontaneous cracks in road and airfield pavements. The test combines fluctuating temperatures, water spraying and dynamic extension/compression to assess sealant performance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Purpose: Accelerated function testing to assess damage from temperature cycling, water exposure and dynamic loads.
  • Specimens: Prepared per EN 13880-6 with concrete blocks (EN 13880-12) or asphalt blocks (EN 13880-11). Block dimensions: 75 ±1 mm × 25.0 ±0.5 mm × 12.0 ±0.5 mm; joint width 12.0 ±0.5 mm. Use three specimens per test.
  • Apparatus:
    • Motor-driven tensile test rig (ISO 5893 class 2A accuracy) to apply cyclic extension/compression and record force.
    • Climate chamber with timed water-spray capability (spray 20% of conditioning time).
    • Temperature indicator (range −30 °C to +30 °C, accuracy ±1 °C).
    • Depth gauge to measure failure depths to 1 mm.
  • Test cycle parameters: Two test types (N1/F1 and N2/F2) with specified starting temperatures (11 ±1 °C for N1/F1; 14 ±1 °C for N2/F2); deformation rate 0.010 ±0.002 mm/min; 3 cycles total.
    • N1/F1 movement: elongation 60% (7.2 mm), compression 20% (2.4 mm).
    • N2/F2 movement: elongation 15% (1.8 mm), compression 5% (0.6 mm).
    • Water spray during temperature intervals 5 °C ↔ 20 °C (1 min spray, 4 min dry).
  • Post-test inspection: Warm to 23 ±2 °C for 1 hour, elongate at 5.5 ±0.7 mm/min, inspect for adhesion/cohesion failures, record failure depths (mm).
  • Results: Calculate maximum tension σ = F / A (N/mm²); report the average of three specimens rounded to 0.1 N/mm². Report adhesion and cohesion failure depths in mm.
  • Reporting: Include sample ID, primer, batch/date, test date, lab name, cycle reference, and results.

Applications and users

  • Practical for sealant manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, highway and airfield engineers, and contractors who need to verify sealant suitability for cold-climate pavements and moving joints.
  • Useful for product development, quality control, specification compliance, and forensic assessment of in-service sealant failures in roads and airfields.

Related standards

  • EN 13880 series (Parts 1–13) - companion test methods (density, penetration, heat resistance, flow, sample preparation, compatibility with asphalt, adhesion/cohesion tests).
  • EN 14188-1 (specifications for hot-applied sealants)
  • ISO 5893 (tensile/compression test equipment specification)
