- Angriff mit Faustfeuerwaffen, Büchsen und Schrotflinten;
- Verglasungen im Innenbereich und Außenbereich von Gebäuden;
- aux attaques au pistolet, fusil/carabine et fusil de chasse ;
- aux vitrages mis en oeuvre à l’intérieur ou à l’extérieur des bâtiments ;
- au produit « vitrage » lui-même, supposé correctement installé.
NOTE 2 La protection apportée par un vitrage résistant aux balles ne dépend pas uniquement du produit lui-même, mais également de la conception et du mode de fixation du vitrage.

Overview
oSIST prEN 1063:2019 (Glass in building - Security glazing - Testing and classification of resistance against bullet attack) is a European draft standard prepared by SIST, focused on enhancing building security through bullet-resistant glazing. The document establishes standardized test methods and performance requirements to classify glass and glass/plastic composite products based on their resistance to firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns.
By providing a consistent framework for evaluating bullet-resistant glazing, the standard supports the construction industry, security consultants, and regulatory authorities in selecting and verifying products suitable for protecting people and property in high-risk environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to glazing products made of one or more layers of glass, and glass/plastic composites.
- Covers both interior and exterior building applications.
- Focuses on the glazing product itself, assuming correct installation.
Classification of Bullet Resistance
- Resistance levels categorized according to weapon type (handgun, rifle, shotgun) and performance under specified test conditions.
- Additional subdivisions based on whether the glazing prevents rear-face splintering (marked as "NS" for no splinters) or allows controlled splinters ("S").
- Extension rules outline how higher-classified products satisfy lower levels of resistance without extra testing.
Testing Methods
- Clearly defined procedures for mounting, preparing, and conditioning test samples.
- Standardized ballistic test conditions, including precise distances, bullet velocities, and strike patterns.
- Use of a witness foil system to detect and classify splintering from bullet impact.
Performance Requirements
- Criteria for "no perforation" by the projectile or fragments.
- Distinctions between total containment (no splinters) and controlled splinter release.
Reporting
- Detailed requirements for test reports to ensure traceability and clarity in product certification.
Applications
Bullet-resistant glazing, as defined in oSIST prEN 1063:2019, has a broad range of practical applications in building security and crime prevention, including:
- Banks, financial institutions, and currency exchange locations where staff and assets require protection from armed attacks.
- Government and military installations that mandate enhanced glazing security for vulnerable entry points.
- Retail facilities (e.g., jewelry stores, high-value goods outlets) at risk of armed robbery.
- Airports, embassies, and consulates requiring bullet-resistant partitioning and facades.
- Prisons and law enforcement buildings, securing observation areas and control rooms.
- Commercial or residential buildings within high-crime environments seeking upgraded security glazing solutions.
The standard assists architects, builders, and property managers in specifying, selecting, and validating bullet-resistant glass systems that meet rigorous security performance benchmarks.
Related Standards
For specification and compliance in the construction and security glazing sectors, oSIST prEN 1063:2019 relates to several key international standards, including:
- EN ISO 12543 series: Laminated glass and laminated safety glass (definitions, requirements, test methods, durability, dimensions, and appearance)

This document (prEN 1063:2019) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 129 “Glass in
building”, the secretariat of which is held by NBN.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 1063:1999.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are:
a) A new ammunition was added for class BR3;
b) A new class was created for rifles (KS);
c) Extension rules have been clearly defined.
Introduction
The main requirement for bullet-resistant glazing is to prevent the penetration of projectiles from
various types of weapon. The classification of bullet-resistance of glazing in this document is a technical
classification, based on common weapons and ammunition, in order of attacking power. As the variety
of weapons and ammunition does not allow them all to be taken into account, a selection had to be
made that covers most weapons and ammunition. The choice of bullet-resistant glazing is established
by the user for each individual case.
1 Scope
This document specifies performance requirements and test methods for the classification of the bullet-
resistance of glass (consisting of one or more layers of glass) and glass/plastic composites.
NOTE 1 The term “bullet-resistant glazing” applies to products that have the obvious characteristics of glass,
but it is understood to include also laminated products of glass and plastics and in some saces, insulating glass
units.
This document applies to:
— attack by handguns, rifles and shotguns;
— glazing in buildings, for interior and exterior use;
— the glazing product itself, assuming proper fixing;
NOTE 2 The protection provided by bullet-resistant glazing depends not only on the product itself, but also
upon the design and fixing of the glass.
