SIST EN 4500-004:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of prEN 4500-004, the CEN draft European standard for aerospace metallic materials. It sets the specific rules for drafting and presenting material standards for titanium and titanium alloys, so it is aimed at standards writers, aerospace material specialists, and anyone preparing or reading EN material specifications for titanium products.
What does SIST EN 4500-004:2026 specify?
SIST EN 4500-004:2026 specifies how to draft a European material standard for titanium and titanium alloys used in aerospace applications. The EN 4500 series covers the general rules for metallic material standards in aerospace, and Part 004 gives the titanium-specific drafting rules.
The document is organized around the front matter, clauses 1 to 4, and informative annexes A to E. Clause 4 is the core drafting section, and the annexes show how the rules are completed in practice.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Completion of the title page |
| Annex B | Completion of the introduction |
| Annex C | Completion of the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements |
| Annex D | Completion of Table 1 |
| Annex E | Completion of the bibliography |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 4500-004:2026?
SIST EN 4500-004:2026 is mainly a drafting rulebook, so its requirements tell authors what to put in each part of a titanium material standard and how to present it consistently.
Title, scope and presentation
Clause 4.2 gives the wording pattern for titles, including the material designation, condition, form, and any relevant application or property information. Annex A shows the style of a completed title page, which helps authors build titles that identify the product unambiguously.
Clause 4.2.2 also controls how the method of melting is named. For forging stock and forgings, the grade is handled differently from other forms; for other forms, the document provides a controlled list of melting terms such as vacuum melting, remelting, plasma cold hearth melting, and electron-beam melting. In practice, this keeps titanium specifications aligned with a common vocabulary.
Clause 4.2.3 lists the permitted form entries and qualifiers for sheets, strips, plates, bars, sections, tubes, wires, forgings, remelting stock, castings, and rings. Clause 4.2.4 adds optional information entries such as structural applications, pressure applications, superplastic forming, machining, fasteners, and welding. These entries matter because they tell users what the standard is intended for without rewriting the whole specification.
Table 1 content and order
Clause 4.5 is the main rule set for Table 1. Clause 4.5.2 requires the chemical composition to be presented in a defined order, so authors do not mix up alloying, gas, trace, ratio, or other elements. Clause 4.5.5 and 4.5.9 require the relevant production and dimensional standard entries, which helps users connect the material standard to the right product standard.
Clause 4.5.10 lists the delivery condition and heat treatment terms to be used, and clause 4.5.12 links the use condition to the same controlled wording or to the delivery condition. Clause 4.5.17 states that cladding thickness on each face is not applicable to titanium and titanium alloys, while clauses 4.5.25 and 4.5.30 state that lines 27 and 97 are not used. That tells authors exactly which rows to complete and which ones to leave out.
Clause 4.5.18 to 4.5.24 cover the performance blocks for tensile, hardness, shear, bending, impact, and creep. Clause 4.5.26 covers the reference heat treatment, and clauses 4.5.28 to 4.5.33 cover marking inspection, dimensional inspection, notes, typical use, and product qualification. In practice, Table 1 is where the technical identity of the standard is fixed.
Annex C and Annex D
Annex C states that the requirements of Table 1 shall be applied and that the documents listed in Table 1 shall also be applied. That makes Table 1 the normative core of a titanium material standard.
Annex D gives worked examples for completing Table 1. It shows how the template is used for titanium alloy products and how qualification-related lines are filled in, including microstructure, grain size, repair by welding, reverse torsion, flattening, fracture toughness, macrostructure, internal imperfections, surface condition, contractile strain ratio, post-creep tensile properties, and surface contamination. This is useful for authors because it shows the level of detail expected in a finished specification.
What terms does SIST EN 4500-004:2026 define?
SIST EN 4500-004:2026 uses the terms and definitions from EN 4259 and EN 4500-001, and it also relies on the controlled wording built into Clause 4.
- Method of melting - the named melting route used in the title and Table 1, such as vacuum melting or plasma cold hearth melting.
- Delivery condition - the condition in which the product is supplied, linked to heat treatment and other finishing steps.
- Use condition - the condition in which the material is intended to be used, which may match or differ from the delivery condition.
- Reference heat treatment - the heat treatment used as the reference state for property or qualification information.
- Product qualification - the qualification programme associated with the product, agreed between manufacturer and purchaser where required.
- P.C.H.M. - plasma cold hearth melted, one of the allowed melting descriptions.
- C.S.R. - contractile strain ratio, a property checked in the example qualification content.
- Hipped - hot isostatically pressed, a processing term used in the form and condition lists.
Who uses SIST EN 4500-004:2026?
SIST EN 4500-004:2026 is used by aerospace standards committees, specification writers, and technical editors who prepare EN material standards for titanium and titanium alloys. It is also used by manufacturers, purchasers, and quality teams who need to read or complete titanium material specifications in the same structure.
In practice, these users rely on it when drafting titles, filling Table 1, linking a material standard to related product and test standards, and defining qualification language for aerospace titanium products.
What changed in SIST EN 4500-004:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 4500-004:2026 supersedes EN 4500-004:2024. The foreword lists these changes:
- addition of line 4.3, “Further intended processing,” and line 5.2, “Dimensional standard,” in the body and in Annex D;
- added introductory sentences to Table 1 in Annex C to make clear that the table is normative and that the listed documents shall be applied;
- editorial changes to clarify which references to documents and annexes are normative or informative;
- restructuring and simplification of the template into a single continuous table.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 4500-004:2026?
Clause 2 names the formal normative references, and the annexes and bibliography point to related aerospace titanium standards and test methods that support drafting and qualification.

What does the SIST EN 4500-004:2026 document contain?
SIST EN 4500-004:2026 contains the drafting rules, not a finished titanium product specification. Its main technical content is the structure of title pages, introductions, scopes, normative references, terms and definitions, and the full Table 1 template used to build a material standard.
Annex D is the most detailed part in practical terms because it shows how the template is completed for a titanium alloy example, including property lines, heat treatment language, inspection items, and qualification items. The bibliography then points to the related EN and ISO documents that authors use when they need actual test methods or companion product standards.
