Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Drawn wire - Part 3: Tolerances on dimensions

This document specifies the tolerances on dimensions of aluminium and aluminium alloy drawn wire for general engineering applications (except aeronautical applications), covering diameters, thicknesses or widths or width across flats up to and including 20 mm.
It applies to drawn wires, except for electrical or welding purposes.
It does not apply to drawing stock.

Overview

EN 1301-3:2008 (CEN) defines the tolerances on dimensions for aluminium and aluminium-alloy drawn wire used in general engineering applications (excluding aeronautical uses). It covers drawn wire forms - round, square, hexagonal and rectangular - with nominal dimensions up to and including 20 mm. The standard does not apply to wire for electrical or welding purposes, nor to drawing stock. Measurement and sampling conditions refer to EN 1301-1.

Key topics

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to aluminium and aluminium-alloy drawn wire for general engineering (not aeronautical, electrical or welding wire, nor drawing stock).
    • Limits dimensions up to 20 mm.
  • Dimensional tolerances by cross-section
    • Round wire: tolerances vary by diameter range (example values: ≈ ±0.02 mm for ≤1 mm up to ≈ ±0.11 mm for 18–20 mm). Ovality (difference between max and min diameter on one cross-section) shall not exceed 50% of the total tolerance.
    • Square & hexagonal wire: tolerances on width across flats (examples: ±0.04 mm for ≤3 mm; ±0.14 mm for 15–20 mm). Deviations from a regular polygon are included.
    • Rectangular wire: separate tolerances for thickness and width (examples: thickness ±0.03 mm for ≤1 mm; width ±0.04 mm for ≤1 mm; up to ±0.14 mm thickness and ±0.18 mm width for 15–20 mm).
  • Measurement rules
    • Sampling and measurement procedures are to follow EN 1301-1.
  • Exclusions
    • Cross-section distortions caused by winding/unwinding are explicitly not covered.

Applications

EN 1301-3:2008 is used by:

  • Manufacturers and wire-drawing mills to specify and control dimensional quality of aluminium drawn wire.
  • Quality control and inspection teams for acceptance testing, sampling and measurement.
  • Procurement and specification writers who require clear dimensional tolerance limits in purchase orders and product datasheets.
  • Designers and component makers who select drawn aluminium wire for fasteners, formed parts and general engineering components (non-aeronautical).
  • Standards bodies and conformity assessors referencing harmonized European tolerances.

Related standards

  • EN 1301-1: Technical conditions for inspection and delivery (normative reference for sampling and measurement).
  • EN 1301-2: Mechanical properties (other part of the EN 1301 series).
