Overview
kSIST FprEN 4604-010:2025 is a European standard developed by CEN for lightweight coaxial cables used in aerospace applications. Specifically, this product standard addresses 50-ohm, light weight, type KX (light WD) coaxial cables engineered for signal transmission in aircraft electrical systems. With operating temperatures ranging from −55 °C to 200 °C and performance guaranteed up to 6 GHz, these cables are critical for high-frequency, high-reliability signal transmission in challenging aerospace environments. The standard outlines the required characteristics, testing methods, and quality assurance provisions for these coaxial cables, ensuring consistency and safety for manufacturers and users.
Key Topics
Cable Characteristics:
- Lightweight Design: Optimized for reducing aircraft mass without sacrificing mechanical or electrical performance.
- Temperature Range: Designed to operate between −55 °C and 200 °C; suitable for extreme aerospace environments. Can be tested to −65 °C for rapid temperature change endurance.
- Impedance & Frequency: Fixed at 50 ohms impedance, supporting reliable signal transmission up to 6 GHz.
- Mechanical Durability: Tested for bend radius, crush resistance, flexure endurance, and various environmental factors.
Material Specifications:
- Conductors: Silver-plated copper adhering to stringent ASTM-B298 standards.
- Dielectric & Jacket: Fluorocarbon insulation and jackets providing thermal stability and electrical insulation.
- Shielding: Multiple layers for effective electromagnetic protection.
Testing and Quality Assurance:
- Comprehensive suite of tests in accordance with EN 3475 includes dielectric strength, flammability, flexure, attenuation, and marking durability.
- Ensures cables meet electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements specified for aerospace use.
Standardized Packaging and Marking:
- Product identification, labeling, and packaging details ensure traceability and consistency across the supply chain.
Applications
kSIST FprEN 4604-010:2025 certified lightweight coaxial cables are integral to a range of aerospace electrical applications where high-frequency signal transmission and low weight are key requirements:
- Aircraft Systems: Used in avionic communication networks, radar systems, navigation equipment, and in-flight entertainment.
- Satellite & Spacecraft: Suitable for onboard interconnects where thermal cycling, reliability, and low mass are essential.
- Military & Defense Aviation: Employed in mission-critical communication nodes and sensory arrays requiring robust, stable high-frequency cabling.
- Aerospace Test Equipment: Ensures performance reliability in laboratory and field testing of advanced aircraft systems.
By standardizing construction, materials, and performance criteria, this standard streamlines procurement, maintenance, and integration for aerospace manufacturers and operators, while also supporting regulatory compliance.
