   Konventionelle Druckluft-Zerstäuber (hoher Luftdruck);
   HVLP-Zerstäuber (high volume low pressure);
   LVLP-Zerstäuber (low volume low pressure);
   Airless-Zerstäuber (Hydraulikdruck);
   Luftunterstützte Airless-Zerstäuber;
   Schwingungs- oder Rotations-Sprühgeräte (Glocken);

EN 13966-1:20033ForewordThis document (EN 13966:2003) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 271, "Surface treatmentequipment - Safety", the secretariat of which is held by DIN.This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text orby endorsement, at the latest by October 2003, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latestby October 2003.According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the followingcountries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland,France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.SIST EN 13966-1:2003

EN 13966-1:20034IntroductionTransfer efficiency is a performance parameter that is used to express the effectiveness of spraying or atomisingequipment in transferring a coating material to the surface of an object.Transfer efficiency is defined as the ratio of coating solids laid down on the surface of an object and forming the dryfilm to the total solid content of the coating material delivered by the atomising and spraying equipment, expressedas a percentage.The use of atomising and spraying equipment with a high transfer efficiency therefore has economic andenvironmental benefits.A standard and reproducible procedure for determining the transfer efficiency is required to:¾ enable a reliable comparison of atomising and spraying equipment through transfer efficiency data quoted bymanufacturers;¾ provide data to show that the atomising and spraying equipment meets minimum
values stipulated in health,safety and environmental legislation.1 ScopeThis European Standard specifies a laboratory procedure for determining the transfer efficiency of atomising andspraying equipment for the application of liquid coating materials onto flat panels. A second part (to be prepared)will cover coating material application to other substrate geometries and provide a method for the determination oftransfer efficiency for atomising and spraying equipment with electrostatic support.This standard applies to the determination of the transfer efficiency of atomising and spraying equipment, such as,but not limited to:¾ conventional air atomiser (high air pressure);¾ HVLP-atomiser (high volume low pressure);¾ LVLP-atomiser (low volume low pressure);¾ airless atomiser (hydraulic pressure);¾ air assisted airless atomiser;¾ vibratory or rotary atomiser (bells);¾ electrostatic supported atomiser.Two methods of determination are included in the standard.The transfer efficiency value resulting from the application of this standard procedure expresses the potentialperformance of atomising and spraying equipment for comparison of different types or models. The value may ormay not be attained in use, where the working conditions and operator practice are likely to differ from those of thestandard test method.The determined transfer efficiency is valid only in conjunction with the parameters shown in the test summary form,see annex C.SIST EN 13966-1:2003

For the purposes of thisstandard, the following terms and definitions also apply:3.1application timetime during which coating material is applied to the test sheet during the transfer efficiency test3.2atomising and spraying equipmentany type of device which can be used to atomise coating materials. Atomising may be achieved by air,hydromechanically (airless) with or without air assistance, or by centrifugal forces such as rotating bells or discs, asdefined in EN 19533.3background panelrigid plate placed behind the test sheet to support it and enable a flat surface to be obtainedSIST EN 13966-1:2003

It can be done by measurement with a fluid flow meter or by calculation from gravimetric measurement.The atomiser spray pattern is fully developed before it reaches the edge of the test sheet and is maintainedconstant over the test width3.12test method 2direct method in which the mass of coating material delivered by the atomiser within the test sheet dimensions, isdetermined gravimetrically (by weighing). The atomiser is triggered on and off within the test sheet dimensions3.13transfer efficiencydefined as the ratio of the mass of coating material solids deposited on an object to the mass of coating materialsolids atomised, expressed as a percentage4 Principle of testThe transfer efficiency of atomising and spraying equipment is determined by measuring directly or indirectly themass of coating material solids delivered by the atomiser and the mass of dry coating material deposited on thetest sheet.5 Test procedureThe test procedure defines the steps to be carried out in the determination and the conditions under which the testis conducted as well as the minimum reporting requirements.A transfer efficiency determination for a particular atomiser consists of at least three independent and consecutivetests of the transfer efficiency under the same conditions.SIST EN 13966-1:2003

EN 13966-1:20037The atomiser transfer efficiency, under the prevailing conditions, is reported as the mean of the values obtained. Ifan individual test result differs from
the mean value by more than +/- 1% the cause of the variation should beinvestigated and the determination repeated.
