Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-26:2026/A11:2026 sets out the safety requirements for electric clocks and similar household appliances. This European standard applies to clocks operated at a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V, including those running on direct current (DC) and battery power. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this amendment aligns with EN IEC 60335-2-26 and introduces specific modifications to enhance the safety of electric clocks in household and similar use environments.

Conforming to this standard helps manufacturers, suppliers, and importers ensure their electric clocks are safe for all typical home users, including children and people with disabilities, as well as domestic animals.

Key Topics

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-26:2026/A11:2026 addresses the following important areas:

  • Scope of Application: Covers all electric clocks for household and similar use, with a rated voltage up to 250 V, including both AC and DC supplied or battery-operated devices.
  • Foreseeable Hazards: Focuses on protecting all persons and domestic animals from potential risks during intended use in and around the home.
  • User Instructions and Marking: Enhances requirements for user manuals and product labeling, ensuring clear instructions about safe handling, especially for vulnerable users.
  • Provisions for Children and People with Disabilities:
    • Specifies that people with disabilities can use these appliances if appropriate supervision and precautions are taken.
    • Requires that children from 8 years of age may use the appliance only under continuous supervision.
    • Recommends keeping appliances out of reach of children under 8 and domestic animals.
  • Safety Practices:
    • Instructions must warn users not to let cords hang over the edge of tables or counters if the appliance is unattended.
    • Children are not to perform cleaning or user maintenance tasks.
  • Modification to Annexes and Bibliography: Updates reference lists and annexes to reflect the latest related standards and safety regulations.

Applications

The standard is relevant to a wide range of household clocks and similar appliances, such as:

  • Wall clocks, table clocks, and alarm clocks used in homes and offices
  • Smart or connected clocks with electrical components
  • Battery-powered clocks for domestic environments

For manufacturers and retailers, compliance with SIST EN IEC 60335-2-26:2026/A11:2026 demonstrates a commitment to product safety and legal conformity within European markets. It facilitates smoother product approval and market access while reducing the risk of recalls or liability issues.

End users benefit from improved instructions and design considerations that make electric clocks safer for children, people with reduced capabilities, and pets.

Related Standards

For comprehensive safety coverage and legal compliance, consider the following related standards:

  • EN IEC 60335-1: General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, forming the foundation for Part 2-26 and its amendments.
  • EN IEC 60335-2-26: Base standard specifying requirements for clocks.
  • IEC 60584-1: Thermocouples - referenced for component safety.
  • ISO 13732-1: Pertains to ergonomic safety and temperature considerations.

Directives and Regulations:

  • EU Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive)
  • EU Regulation 2023/1230 (applicable to machinery safety)
  • EU Directive 2014/53/EU (Radio Equipment Directive)

Adhering to these standards ensures compliance with European safety legislation, promotes trust among consumers, and reduces potential hazards associated with household electrical clocks. For up-to-date references and further guidance, consult CENELEC or your national standardization body.
