Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates - Resistance to water penetration - Test method

1.1 General This European Standard specifies the test method for determining the resistance to water penetration for doors in a closed position. The doors are intended for installation in areas in the reach of people, for which the main intended uses are giving safe access for goods, vehicles and persons in industrial, commer-cial or residential premises. The doors may be manually or power operated. This document applies to all doors provided in accordance with prEN 13 241:1998. 1.2 Exclusions It does not apply to: - lock gates and dock gates; - doors on lifts; - doors on vehicles; - armoured doors; - doors mainly for the retention of animals; - theatre textile curtains; - horizontally moving doors less than 2,5 m wide and 6,25 m² area, designed principally for pedestrian use; - revolving doors of any size;
- doors outside the reach of people (such as crane gantry fences); - railway barriers; - barriers used solely for vehicles.

Tore - Widerstand gegen eindringendes Wasser - Prüfverfahren

1.1 Allgemeines Diese Europäische Norm legt das Verfahren zur Prüfung des Widerstandes von Toren gegen eindringendes Wasser
in geschlossener Stellung fest. Die Tore sind für den Einbau in Zugangsbereichen von Personen vorgesehen, wobei deren Hauptaufgaben darin bestehen, für Waren- und Fahrzeugverkehr sichere Zufahrt und Personen sicheren Zutritt zu Industrie-, Gewerbe-oder Wohnanlagen zu ermöglichen. Die Tore dürfen hand- oder kraftbetätigt sein. Diese Norm gilt für alle Tore nach prEN 13241:1998. 1.2 Ausnahmen Sie gilt nicht für: - Schleusentore und Docktore; - Türen in Aufzügen; - Türen in Fahrzeugen; - gepanzerte Türen; - Tore, die hauptsächlich zum Zurückhalten von Tieren vorgesehen sind; - textile Theatervorhänge; - horizontal bewegbare Tore mit einer Breite von weniger als 2,5 m und einer Fläche von weniger als 6,25 m², die hauptsächlich für die Benutzung durch Fußgänger ausgelegt sind; - Drehtüren von beliebiger Größe; - Türen außerhalb der Reichweite von Personen (wie z. B. Schutzgitter für Portalkräne);

Overview

EN 12489:2000 - issued by CEN - specifies a laboratory test method for determining resistance to water penetration of industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates in the closed position. It covers doors intended to provide safe access for goods, vehicles and people in industrial, commercial or residential premises. The standard applies to both manually and power-operated doors and is intended for doors supplied in accordance with prEN 13 241:1998.

Key topics and requirements

  • Purpose: Evaluate water ingress (leakage) through a door assembly when closed, under controlled test conditions.
  • Scope: Applies to doors and gates located within the reach of people and used for access of goods, vehicles and persons.
  • Exclusions: The standard does not apply to:
    • lock gates and dock gates
    • doors on lifts or vehicles
    • armoured doors
    • doors mainly for retention of animals
    • theatre textile curtains
    • small horizontally moving pedestrian doors (less than 2.5 m wide and 6.25 m²)
    • revolving doors
    • doors outside the reach of people (e.g., crane gantry fences)
    • railway barriers and barriers used solely for vehicles
  • Test focus (high level): Controlled application of water to a closed door assembly and assessment for penetration-used to determine performance under simulated rain or water exposure.
  • Interface with other standards: Intended for use with doors supplied to prEN 13 241:1998; it complements product, performance and installation standards for external doors.

Applications

EN 12489:2000 is practical and relevant for:

  • Manufacturers developing and validating door designs for water ingress resistance.
  • Independent test laboratories performing type-testing or verification for product certification.
  • Specifiers and architects selecting door systems for buildings where water tightness is required.
  • Building owners, facility managers and installers assessing suitability of doors for exposed locations and ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
  • Procurement and quality departments for inclusion of objective test requirements in technical specifications and tender documents.

Related standards

  • prEN 13 241:1998 (referenced supply/production standard)
  • Other CEN product and performance standards for doors and windows (for broader performance requirements and installation guidance)
