Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates - Resistance to water penetration - Classification
1.1 General This European Standard specifies the classification for resistance to water penetration for doors in a closed position, when tested in accordance with EN 12489. The doors are intended for installation in areas in the reach of people, for which the main in-tended
uses are giving safe access for goods, vehicles and persons in industrial, commercial or residential premises. The doors may be manually or power operated. This document applies to all doors provided in accordance with prEN 13241:1998. 1.2 Exclusions It does not apply to: - lock gates and dock gates; - doors on lifts; - doors on vehicles; - armoured doors; - doors mainly for the retention of animals; - theatre textile curtains; - horizontally moving doors less than 2,5 m wide and 6,25 m² area, designed principally for pedestrian use; - revolving doors of any size; - doors outside the reach of people (such as crane gantry fences); - railway barriers; - barriers used solely for vehicles.
Tore - Widerstand gegen eindringendes Wasser -Klassifizierung
1.1 Allgemeines Die vorliegende Europäische Norm legt die Klassifizierung des Widerstandes gegen eindringendes Wasser für Tore in geschlossener Stellung fest, wenn sie nach EN 12489 geprüft sind. Die Tore sind für den Einbau in Zugangsbereichen von Personen vorgesehen, wobei deren Hauptaufgaben darin bestehen, für Waren- und Fahrzeugverkehr sichere Zufahrt und Personen sicheren Zutritt zu Industrie-, Gewerbe-oder Wohnanlagen zu ermöglichen. Die Tore dürfen hand- oder kraftbetätigt sein. Diese Norm gilt für alle Tore nach prEN 13241. 1.2 Ausnahmen Sie gilt nicht für: - Schleusentore und Docktore; - Türen in Aufzügen; - Türen in Fahrzeugen;
1.1 Généralité La présente norme européenne spécifie la classification de la résistance à la pénétration de l'eau des portes en position fermée, lors d'un essai effectué conformément à l'EN 12489. Les portes sont destinées à être installées dans des zones accessibles aux personnes dont l'utilisation principale prévue est de donner un accès sans danger aux marchandises, aux véhicules et aux personnes dans des locaux industriels, commerciaux ou résidentiels. Les portes peuvent être manoeuvrées manuellement ou motorisées. Le présent document s'applique à toutes les portes prévues conformément au prEN 13241:1998. 1.2 Exclusions Elle ne s'applique pas : - aux portails fermés à clé et aux grilles d'entrée de docks ; - aux portes d'ascenseurs ; - aux portes de véhicules ; - aux portes blindées ; - aux portes principalement utilisées pour la retenue des animaux ; - aux rideaux en tissu de théâtres ; - aux portes manoeuvrées horizontalement ayant une largeur inférieure à 2,5 m et une surface inférieure à 6,25 m² principalement destinées à l'usage des piétons ;
- aux portes tambours quelles que soient leurs dimensions ; - aux portes hors d'atteinte des personnes (comme les barrières sur les portiques de grue) ; - aux barrières de passages à niveau ; - aux barrières exclusivement destinées à la circulation automobile.

Overview
EN 12425:2000 is a European Standard from CEN that defines the classification for resistance to water penetration of industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates. The classification applies to doors in the closed position when tested in accordance with EN 12489. It covers doors intended to provide safe access for goods, vehicles and people in industrial, commercial or residential premises and includes both manually and power-operated units. The document is intended to be used with the product provisions of prEN 13241:1998.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of classification: Establishes classes for how resistant a door or gate is to water penetration when closed (classification is based on tests defined in EN 12489).
- Test reference: All resistance-to-water assessments are carried out following the test method specified in EN 12489 (the standard does not itself provide test procedures).
- Application context: Focuses on doors in areas within reach of people - for access by goods, vehicles and persons - covering both manual and electrically driven systems.
- Exclusions: The standard explicitly does not apply to certain door types, including:
- lock gates and dock gates
- doors on lifts or on vehicles
- armoured doors
- doors mainly for animal retention
- theatre textile curtains
- small horizontally moving pedestrian doors (< 2.5 m wide and < 6.25 m²)
- revolving doors
- doors located outside the reach of people (e.g., crane gantry fences)
- railway barriers and vehicle-only barriers
Practical applications
- Manufacturers use EN 12425 to classify their industrial, commercial and garage doors for marketing, technical data sheets and product declarations.
- Specifiers and architects reference the classification when selecting door products to meet building design requirements for weather resistance and durability.
- Building owners and facility managers rely on resistance-to-water classifications to choose doors that protect interiors from ingress and moisture-related damage.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies use EN 12425 in combination with EN 12489 to verify and certify product performance.
- Procurement and compliance: Useful for writing tender specifications and ensuring conformity with project or regulatory requirements.
