This document applies to all doors provided in accordance with prEN 13 241:1998. 1.2 Exclusions It does not apply to: - lock gates and dock gates; - doors on lifts; - doors on vehicles; - armoured doors; - door mainly for the retention of animals; - theatre textile curtains;
- horizontally moving doors less than 2,5 m wide and 6,25 m ² area, designed principally for pedestrian use; - revolving doors of any size;
- doors outside the reach of people (such as crane gantry fences); - railway barriers; - barriers used solely for vehicles.
Tore - Widerstand gegen Windlast - Prüfung und Berechnung
1.1 Allgemeines Diese Europäische Norm legt das Prüfverfahren für den und/oder die Berechnung des Widerstand(es) gegen Windlast von Toren in geschlossener Stellung fest.Die Tore sind für den Einbau in Zugangsbereichen von Personen vorgesehen, wobei deren Hauptaufgaben darin bestehen, für Waren- und Fahrzeugverkehr sichere Zufahrt und Personen sicheren Zutritt zu Industrie-, Gewerbe-oder Wohnanlagen zu ermöglichen. Die Tore dürfen hand- oder kraftbetätigt sein. Diese Norm gilt für alle Tore nach prEN 13241:1998. 1.2 Ausnahmen Sie gilt nicht für: - Schleusentore und Docktore; - Türen in Aufzügen; - Türen in Fahrzeugen; - gepanzerte Türen; - Tore, die hauptsächlich zum Zurückhalten von Tieren vorgesehen sind; - textile Theatervorhänge; - horizontal bewegbare Tore mit einer Breite von weniger als 2,5 m und einer Fläche von weniger als 6,25 m², die hauptsächlich für die Benutzung durch Fußgänger ausgelegt sind; - Drehtüren von beliebiger Größe; - Tore außerhalb der Reichweite von Personen (wie z. B. Schutzgitter für Portalkräne);
- Eisenbahnschranken; - ausschließlich für den Fahrzeugverkehr verwendete Schranken.
Portes équipants les locaux industriels, commerciaux et de garage - Résistance a la charge de vent - Essais et calculs
La présente norme européenne spécifie la méthode d'essai et/ou de calcul de la résistance des portes en position fermée aux charges dues au vent. Les portes sont destinées à être installées dans des zones accessibles aux personnes dont l'utilisation principale prévue est de donner un accès sans danger aux marchandises, aux véhicules et aux personnes dans des locaux industriels, commerciaux ou résidentiels. Les portes peuvent être manoeuvrées manuellement ou motorisées. Le présent document s'applique à toutes les portes prévues conformément au prEN 13241:1998. 1.2 Exclusions Elle ne s'applique pas : - aux portails fermés à clé et aux grilles d'entrée de docks ; - aux portes d'ascenseurs ; - aux portes de véhicules ;- aux portes blindées ; - aux portes principalement utilisées pour la retenue des animaux ; - aux rideaux en tissu de théâtres ; - aux portes manoeuvrées horizontalement ayant une largeur inférieure à 2,5 m et une surface inférieure à 6,25 m² principalement destinées à l'usage des piétons ; - aux portes tambours quelles que soient leurs dimensions ;
- aux portes hors d'atteinte des personnes (comme les barrières sur les portiques de grue) ; - aux barrières de passages à niveau ; - aux barrières exclusivement destinées à la circulation automobile.

Overview
EN 12444:2000 is a CEN standard that specifies the testing and calculation of wind load resistance for industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates. It covers assessment methods for doors in the closed position, intended to provide safe access for goods, vehicles and people in industrial, commercial or residential premises. The standard applies to both manually and power-operated doors and is referenced alongside prEN 13 241:1998. EN 12444 was adopted by some national bodies (e.g., SIST EN 12444:2001).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of application: Defines which door types are covered - primarily doors used where people can reach them (industrial, commercial, garage).
- Test methods and calculations: Specifies when to use physical testing and when to use calculation procedures to determine wind load resistance (for doors in the closed position).
- Design and performance focus: Addresses structural resistance and operational safety under specified wind loads.
- Inclusions and exclusions: Lists door types excluded from the standard, such as lock gates, dock gates, lift doors, vehicle-mounted doors, armoured doors, doors primarily for animal retention, theatre textile curtains, small horizontally moving pedestrian doors (<2.5 m wide or <6.25 m²), revolving doors, doors outside the reach of people, railway barriers and barriers used solely for vehicles.
- Classification context: Related to ICS areas 91.090 (External structures) and 91.060.50 (Doors and windows).
Applications
EN 12444 is practical for organizations and professionals who need to ensure door safety and performance against wind loads:
- Manufacturers: Use the standard to design and validate door panels, frames and fixing systems for wind resistance.
- Testing laboratories: Perform type-testing or verification using the specified test methods or calculation procedures.
- Architects & structural engineers: Reference wind-load requirements when specifying door systems for buildings exposed to wind.
- Installers and contractors: Verify installed doors meet required wind performance for compliance and safety.
- Specifiers & procurement teams: Include EN 12444 conformity in tender documents and product specifications.
- Facility managers and compliance officers: Assess existing doors for suitability in high-wind locations and plan upgrades.
Related standards
- References prEN 13 241:1998 (as noted in EN 12444 scope). For project compliance, consult any national adoptions (e.g., SIST EN 12444:2001) and local building codes that set site-specific wind loads.
By applying EN 12444, stakeholders can ensure industrial, commercial and garage doors meet recognized wind load resistance criteria - improving durability, safety and regulatory compliance.
