Transportable gas cylinders - Gas cylinder identification (excluding LPG) - Part 3: Colour coding

This European Standard specifies a colour coding system for the secondary method of identification of the contents of gas cylinders for industrial gases, breathing gas application and gases for medical use with particular reference to the properties of the gas or gas mixture.
This European Standard does not apply to cylinders containing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), to refrigerant gases, to portable fire extinguishers or stationary cylinder extinguishing. Cylinder bundles are not covered in this document, for bundle identification see ISO 10961.
NOTE   LPG includes substances carried under the UN number 1965 "Hydrocarbon gas mixture, liquefied, N.O.S."

Ortsbewegliche Gasflaschen - Gasflaschen-Kennzeichnung (ausgenommen Flüssiggas LPG) - Teil 3: Farbcodierung

Overview

EN 1089-3:2011 (CEN) defines a European colour-coding system for the secondary identification of transportable gas cylinders (excluding LPG). It covers colour assignment for cylinder shoulders and-for gases for medical use-the cylinder body, to help identify contents at a distance (e.g., during emergency response). This standard is intended for industrial gases, breathing gases and medical gases and complements primary labelling requirements in RID/ADR.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and exclusions: Applies to transportable gas cylinders for industrial, breathing and medical use. Excludes LPG, refrigerant gases, portable or stationary fire extinguishers and cylinder bundles (see ISO 10961).
  • Secondary identification only: Colour coding is a visual aid; regulatory labels and markings (RID/ADR) remain primary.
  • Shoulder colour mandatory: Hazard/identification colours must be applied to cylinder shoulders. Two-colour schemes may use bands or quadrants (quadrants limited to breathing air).
  • Body colour for medical gases: All cylinders for gases for medical use must have a white body; white bodies are not permitted for other uses.
  • Colour selection rules:
    • Hazard hierarchy (primary): Toxic/corrosive = yellow, Flammable = red, Oxidizing = light blue, Inert = bright green.
    • Specific gases override hazard colours: Oxygen = white, Nitrous oxide = blue, Acetylene = maroon.
    • Inert gases (medical differentiation): Argon = dark green, Nitrogen = black, Carbon dioxide = grey, Helium = brown.
    • Medical oxygen mixtures (≥20 % O2) use component colour combinations, e.g. air/synthetic air = white + black, O2/He = white + brown, O2/CO2 = white + grey, O2/N2O = white + blue. Mixtures with <20 % O2 are coloured bright green.
  • Colour standards: Colours are referenced to RAL 840HR (Annex A).
  • Marking “N”: Cylinders colour-coded per this standard shall also carry the letter “N” twice on the shoulder (diametrically opposed), unless no risk of misinterpretation.

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers and refillers of gas cylinders for industrial, medical and breathing applications
  • Medical gas suppliers, hospitals and clinical engineering teams
  • Gas distributors, emergency responders, fire services and safety officers
  • Regulatory bodies and conformity assessors implementing consistent cylinder identification across Europe
