(Main)Aerospace series - Unmanned Aircraft Systems - Part 005: Verification method for the Geocaging function
- Abstract
This document specifies requirements, test methods and pass criteria for the:
— implemented static geocage function used to prevent the UA from breaching the horizontal and vertical limits of the planned operational volume;
— information to be provided in the manufacturer’s instructions describing this function, its limits and the required size of the contingency volume after accounting the errors, reaction time and corrections.
This document does not cover the dynamic geocage function.
In addition, this document only covers the termination of the flight of the UA by the geo-caging function when breaching the OV. It does not address the compliance to the technical requirements imposed by Regulation (EU) 2019/945 on the Flight Termination System which are fully addressed by standard EN 4709-006, including the automatic triggering of the termination performed independently from the geo-caging function.

kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025 is a SIST standard in the Aerospace series for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. It specifies requirements, test methods and pass criteria for the geocaging function that keeps a Unmanned Aircraft (UA) inside the planned flight geography and operational volume, and for the manufacturer instructions that describe that function and its limits. The document supports manufacturers, importers, distributors, conformity assessment bodies and operators who need a common way to verify containment and related flight-termination behavior.
What does kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025 specify?
kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025 covers the implemented static geocage function and the information needed to use it correctly. It also covers the geocage-driven flight termination action when the UA breaches the operational volume.
The scope is limited in two important ways. It does not cover the dynamic geocage function, and it only addresses flight termination triggered by geocaging. The separate technical requirements for the Flight Termination System (FTS) are covered by EN 4709-006, including the automatic triggering of termination that happens independently from the geocaging function.
The introduction also places the document in context:
- it supports SORA Step #9 containment, also called standard containment;
- it is not a complete means of compliance to that SORA step because it does not include design requirements.
The document is organized into these main parts:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - Normative references
- Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 - List of abbreviated terms
- Clause 5 - Geocaging function requirements
- Clause 6 - Geocaging information requirements
- Annex ZA - relationship with Regulation (EU) 2019/945
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025?
The core idea of kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025 is simple: the geocaging function must keep the UA inside the flight geography in normal use, bring it back if it leaves that area, and trigger flight termination if it reaches the operational volume boundary. The standard then defines how to configure, verify and document that behavior.
Programming the flight geography and operational volume
Clause 5.2 requires the remote pilot to be able to upload the operational volume limits and either the contingency volume or the flight geography limits before take-off. The vertical boundary must include at least one upper height or altitude reference, chosen by the manufacturer, such as AMSL, WGS-84, ATO, AGL or DTG.
The horizontal boundary must be defined either as:
- a circle with minimum and maximum radius, or
- a polygon with limits on angle sharpness, segment length and segment intersections.
In practice, this means the geocaging user interface must accept only the forms and sizes the manufacturer allows, and it must reject values outside those limits. If the UA has a geo-awareness function, the manufacturer instructions should also tell the operator how to check compatibility with a UAS Geographical Zone (UGZ).
Clause 5.2 also checks loading behavior. The UI must show whether the limits have been loaded, whether they were loaded correctly, and when loading is not possible. It must also show an alert if a flight is started without loaded limits.
Limiting the flight plan
Clause 5.3 prevents the operator from building a flight plan that starts, ends or navigates outside the flight geography. Take-off outside the flight geography, waypoints outside it, a home position outside it and a landing position outside it are all blocked.
This matters because the geocaging function is not only a geofence during flight - it also acts before flight by preventing an invalid plan from being set. Clause 5.3 also requires the system to reject changes to the FG/OV while in flight, and it defines bench, ground and flight tests to prove that behavior.
For verification, the clause requires repeated tests and traceable records with date, time and results. If a test fails, the failure must be recorded, analyzed and solved before the test series is restarted.
Keeping the UA inside the flight geography
Clause 5.4 requires the geocaging function to start an automatic contingency manoeuvre when the UA breaches the flight geography, in automatic, semi-automatic or manual modes. The point is to keep the UA within the operational volume under normal conditions, even if it briefly crosses the flight geography boundary.
The clause also requires a caution alert when the UA enters the contingency volume. The alert must be visual on the Command Station and may also be aural or haptic. For verification, the standard uses flight tests, including cases with horizontal limits, vertical limits, sharp polygon angles and automatic return-to-home behavior.
The test method relies on position measurement:
- horizontal position is measured using GNSS, with guidance from EN 4709-001;
- vertical position is measured with sensors inside the UA, depending on the vertical reference used.
Clause 5.4 also requires the tests to consider positioning and accuracy errors, response time, wind, flight speed and override capability. The pass criteria require repeated successful activations and evidence that the UA returns to the flight geography within the defined envelope.
Triggering flight termination at the operational volume
Clause 5.5 requires the FTS to be triggered automatically when the UA reaches the horizontal or vertical limits of the operational volume. It also requires a warning alert to the remote pilot at that point.
The verification method is a flight test, preferably in VLOS over a controlled ground area. The clause allows non-destructive testing, including digital recording of the FTS signal, and it points to EN 4709-006 for the minimum number of tests. The practical meaning is that geocaging must not stop at warning or contingency behavior - it must also be able to activate the flight termination action at the OV boundary.
What the manufacturer must explain
Clause 6 requires the manufacturer instructions to describe how the user interface works, what happens when the OV is breached, and how the automatic contingency manoeuvre behaves. That includes the horizontal and vertical manoeuvres and any remote pilot override capability.
The instructions must also provide typical and worst-case horizontal and vertical manoeuvre spans, position accuracy and standard deviation, reaction time, and a summary table of distances travelled in typical and worst-case conditions. Those values are what the operator uses to size the contingency volume in a way that matches the actual UAS performance and the operating conditions.
What terms does kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025 define?
- Flight geography (FG) - the airspace volume or volumes in which the UAS operator plans to conduct normal operations.
- Operational volume (OV) - the combination of the flight geography and the contingency volume.
- Contingency volume - the airspace outside the flight geography where contingency procedures apply.
- Caution alert - an alert that requires immediate awareness and a subsequent response from the remote pilot; here it is linked to breach of the flight geography.
- Warning alert - an alert that requires immediate awareness and immediate response from the remote pilot; here it is linked to breach of the operational volume.
- Flight Termination System (FTS) - the system that terminates flight when triggered, as referenced by EN 4709-006.
- Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) - the satellite-based positioning system used to measure horizontal position.
- UAS Geographical Zone (UGZ) - an airspace portion established by the competent authority to facilitate, restrict or exclude UAS operations for safety, privacy, data protection, security or environmental reasons.
Who uses kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025?
kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025 is written for economic operators that need a common verification method. The introduction explicitly names manufacturers, importers, distributors, their trade associations, and bodies involved in conformity assessment procedures.
In practice, it is also used by:
- UAS design and verification teams, to build and test geocaging functions;
- quality and compliance teams, to document the test evidence;
- operators and remote pilots, to configure FG, OV and contingency volume before flight;
- test labs and conformity assessors, to run bench, ground and flight tests;
- buyers and system integrators, to check whether a UAS supports the containment behavior they need.
Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025?
- EN 4709-001 - provides product requirements and verification, and it is the base source for terms and GNSS guidance used in the geocaging tests.
- EN 4709-006 - covers means to terminate flight, including the technical requirements and verification for the FTS.
- EN 4709-007 - provides general product requirements for UAS classes C5 and C6, including how FG, contingency volume and OV limits are displayed on the user interface.
What does the kSIST FprEN 4709-005:2025 document contain?
The document contains requirement clauses, verification methods and pass criteria for geocaging configuration, flight plan limitation, containment behavior and FTS triggering. Clause 6 then turns those requirements into the information that must appear in the manufacturer instructions, including manoeuvre spans, reaction time and the summary table for contingency volume sizing.
It also contains a set of figures that illustrate the SORA semantic model and the test cases for horizontal limits, vertical limits, sharp angles and return-to-home behavior. Those figures support the flight-test procedures, but the actual test logic is written in the clauses.
Annex ZA gives the correspondence with Regulation (EU) 2019/945 for class C6 unmanned aircraft systems. The bibliography points to EN 4709-003, Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947, and the Easy Access Rules for Unmanned Aircraft Systems.

5 Geocaging function requirements
5.1 Detailed requirements
The geocaging function shall provide a way to program the flight geography and the operational
volume.
The geocaging function has to be implemented on the UA and achieve the following objectives:
(1) ensure that, in normal operation, the UA is maintained inside the flight geography;
(2) once breaching the FG, the geocage function shall bring back the UA inside;
(3) once breaching the operational volume, the geocage function shall activate the flight termination.
Those objectives require:
a) the upload before take-off of the flight geography; and
b) the upload before take-off of the contingency volume or the operational volume, taking into account
the information provided in the manufacturer instructions.
oSIST prEN 4709-005:2023
prEN 4709-005:2023 (E)
Achieving the first objective (1) requires:
c) the flight plan limitation (prohibition of take-off, landing, waypoints, home points or any automatic
command outside the FG).
Achieving the second objective (2) requires:
d) triggering of a caution alert when the UA breaches the limits of the FG. The caution alert could be
visual with one or more of the following: aural (sound) and/or haptic;
e) an automatic contingency manoeuvre aimed to bring back the UA inside the Flight Geography (FG).
It shall be triggered when the UA reaches the flight geography limits taking into account
positioning/accuracy errors.
Achieving the third objective (3) requires:
f) triggering of a warning alert when the UA reaches the limits of the operational volume;
g) the automatic triggering of the Flight Termination System (FTS) when the UA reaches the limits of
the operational volume as per Clause 5 “Product requirements and compliance of means to
terminate the flight for Class 6 UAS” of EN 4709-006 .
NOTE The validation of manufacturer instructions to define the ground risk buffer are considered out of the
scope of this document and are treated in EN 4709-006 FTS document.
The compliance of the geocaging function towards these requirements shall be demonstrated.
