SIST EN 4500-002:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of a European Aerospace series standard published by SIST. It gives the specific rules for drafting and presenting material standards for aluminium, aluminium alloys and magnesium alloys used in aerospace applications. The document is for people who write, review, or use aerospace material standards and need a consistent way to describe the material, properties, tests, and qualification items.

What does SIST EN 4500-002:2026 specify?

SIST EN 4500-002:2026 specifies the drafting and presentation rules for aerospace metallic material standards, with specific rules for aluminium, aluminium alloys and magnesium alloys. It is part of the EN 4500 series, which sets the common structure for these standards.

The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and rules for drafting a European standard for aerospace metallic materials. It also includes five annexes: Annexes A, B, D and E are informative, and Annex C is normative.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AExample of a completed title page
Annex BExample of a completed introduction
Annex CCompletion of the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements
Annex DCompletion of Table 1
Annex ECompletion of the bibliography

In practice, this means the standard is not a product specification itself. It tells standard writers how to structure a material standard and what information to include when the material is aluminium or magnesium based.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 4500-002:2026?

SIST EN 4500-002:2026 gives the rules for how an aerospace material standard shall be written, especially in the title, introduction, scope, and Table 1. The most important requirements are about how to present the material identity, condition, test items, and qualification information so that the resulting material standard can be used consistently.

Title and introduction

The title needs to identify the material family, form, and condition clearly. Annex A and clause 4.2 show that the title can include the alloy designation, temper, surface condition, form, and thickness range. Clause 4.2.2 also allows two use conditions, such as T4 and T42 or T6 and T62, to be quoted together when they have the same mechanical properties and are metallurgically the same. That matters because users must not infer different performance from a title that actually covers equivalent conditions.

Scope and temperature conditions

Clause 4.3 says the material standards are prepared on the basis that the material will be supplied in the Tx511 condition according to EN 515. They can also be used for Tx510, but then the scope has to be completed according to Annex C. In practice, this forces the writer to state the intended supply condition precisely, so buyers and manufacturers know which delivery route the standard supports.

Table 1 and the way information is presented

Clause 4.5 sets out the content of Table 1 line by line. It covers material designation, chemical composition, melting method, form, production method, further intended processing, limiting dimensions, technical specification, dimensional standard, delivery condition, test samples and test pieces, heat treatment, dimensions concerned, cladding thickness, test-piece direction, and the different property lines.

This structure matters because it is the backbone of the material standard. If a line is used, it has to be filled in consistently; if a line is not relevant, the document identifies that as well.

Composition, temper, and dimensional information

Clause 4.5.2 gives special rules for chemical composition. For aluminium alloys, the order of elements and limits follow the registration for the alloy designation, while magnesium alloys follow the order registered with ASTM B275. Clause 4.5.9 says line 5.2 shall indicate the applicable dimensional standard, and clauses 4.5.10 and 4.5.12 require temper designations to follow EN 515 or EN 1753. For a reader, this means the composition and dimensional references are not free-form text - they have to match the applicable family rules.

Test-related lines and special cases

Clause 4.5 includes specific guidance for several property lines. Electrical conductivity on line 32 can be mandatory, and if it is part of a batch uniformity check, line 82 is used instead. Stress corrosion on line 39 and fracture toughness on line 40 have special uses for mandatory testing or dispute resolution, and line 47 can be used as a substitute test for line 40. Line 72 covers cladding chemical composition, and line 82 covers batch uniformity for electrical conductivity and hardness.

For users, this means the standard distinguishes between routine requirements, batch checks, and fallback tests. That helps avoid mixing up production control data with acceptance test data.

Items used and not used

Clause 4.5 also identifies some lines that are not normally used for aluminium and magnesium alloys, such as line 3 for method of melting and line 20 for impact strength. Line 27 is not used, and line 97 is not used. This matters because the template is broad, but not every line applies to this material family.

What terms does SIST EN 4500-002:2026 define?

SIST EN 4500-002:2026 relies on terms defined in EN 4259 and EN 4500-001, and it also points to EN 515 and EN 1753 for temper designations. These are the key terms and abbreviations readers need to interpret the document correctly.

  • Temper designation - the code that identifies the condition of aluminium or magnesium material after processing and heat treatment.
  • Delivery condition - the condition in which the material is supplied to the buyer.
  • Use condition - the condition applied for the intended service or reference state in the material standard.
  • Batch uniformity - the check used to show that a batch is consistent for properties such as electrical conductivity or hardness.
  • Product qualification - the qualification programme used to show that a semi-finished product meets the standard’s qualification requirements.
  • Material designation - the identifier used to name the alloy and product in the material standard.
  • WQ - water quench, used in the heat-treatment descriptions in Annex D.
  • LT - longitudinal-transverse test-piece direction, used in the property tables.

Who uses SIST EN 4500-002:2026?

SIST EN 4500-002:2026 is used by standards writers, aerospace materials specialists, and technical committees who prepare material standards for aluminium and magnesium alloys. It is also used by manufacturers, laboratories, purchasers, and quality managers who need to read or create the content of a material standard in the same format.

In practice, it supports:

  • drafting aerospace material specifications,
  • selecting the correct composition and temper wording,
  • setting test and inspection lines in Table 1,
  • defining qualification requirements,
  • and checking that references and annexes are placed correctly.

What changed in SIST EN 4500-002:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 4500-002:2026 supersedes EN 4500-002:2024. The foreword states these significant changes:

  • line 4.3, “Further intended processing,” was added in the body and in Annex D;
  • line 5.2, “Dimensional standard,” was added in the body and in Annex D;
  • introductory sentences were added to Table 1 in Annex C to make clear that the table is normative and that its listed documents shall be applied;
  • editorial changes were made to clarify whether references to other documents or annexes are normative or informative;
  • the document was restructured and the template was simplified into a single continuous table.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 4500-002:2026?

The document names the following standards and related documents as key references or companions:

StandardWhat it contributes
EN 4259General terms and definitions for aerospace metallic materials
EN 4500-001General rules for drafting and presenting material standards
EN 515Temper designations for aluminium and aluminium alloys wrought products
EN 1753Temper designations for magnesium and magnesium alloys
ASTM B275Ordering of elements for magnesium alloy composition presentation
EN 4258Overall organization of aerospace metallic materials standardization
EN 4400-1Example technical specification used in Table 1 and Annex D
EN 2043Qualification requirements for semi-finished products
EN 2002-001, EN 2002-17, EN 2002-20, EN 2002-23Test methods cited in Table 1 examples for tensile, integrity, eddy current, and sharp-notch testing
EN 2004-10, EN 2070-4, EN 2070-5, EN 2716, EN 2718, EN 2720, EN 6018Methods and specifications used in the examples for specimen preparation, tube tests, corrosion, residual stress, and density

These references matter because the document is a drafting rule set, so the actual test and qualification content is pulled from companion standards.

What does the SIST EN 4500-002:2026 document contain?

The document contains a drafting template for aerospace material standards, plus worked examples that show how to complete each part. Annex D is especially useful because it illustrates a filled-in Table 1 with lines for composition, temper, dimensions, mechanical properties, corrosion-related checks, conductivity, and qualification items.

It also includes guidance on title wording, introduction wording, and bibliography completion. Clause 4 and Annex C show how the normative references and requirements sections are to be built, while Annex E shows how to complete the bibliography.

For practical use, the document is mainly a model for writing a material standard, not a test method standard. The examples show how to format the information so that engineers, purchasers, and certification teams can read the resulting standard in the same way.
