Overview
EN ISO 7010:2020/A7:2024 is Amendment 7 to the harmonized European adoption of ISO 7010 (Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs). Approved by CEN in December 2024, this amendment adds three registered safety signs to the ISO 7010 repertoire and clarifies implementation notes. The amendment is identical to ISO 7010:2019/Amd 7:2023 and will be adopted as a national standard across CEN member countries by mid‑2025.
Key topics and requirements
- New registered safety signs added
- P075 - Do not stare at light source
- Function: prohibit staring at a light source.
- Image content: human eye + light source with seven radiating lines.
- Note: standardized/registered as IEC 60417‑6159‑1.
- W079 - Warning; Hot content
- Function: warn of hot contents (liquid, gas or other media).
- Image content: three parallel vertical S‑shaped lines in a circle.
- W080 - Warning; Hot steam
- Function: warn of emission of hot steam.
- Image content: plume of steam above a horizontal line.
- Note: symbol standardized as IEC 60417‑5597 (“Steam, low jet”).
- P075 - Do not stare at light source
- Sign metadata required: each registered sign is documented with referent, function, image content, hazard, intended human behaviour and additional information.
- Comprehension/testing guidance: ISO 9186‑1 test data are not available for these three signs; therefore a supplementary text sign is recommended to increase comprehension unless the sign is supported by manuals, instructions or training.
- Colour matching: electronic colour reproduction is not reliable; for colourimetric and photometric properties, follow ISO 3864‑4.
- Availability: all signs are available on the ISO Online Browsing Platform (OBP).
Practical applications
- Use these registered safety signs in workplaces and installations where optical radiation, high‑temperature contents or hot steam present hazards - e.g., manufacturing plants, food and beverage processing, boiler rooms, laboratory equipment, medical/laser devices.
- Typical users:
- Safety managers and EHS professionals implementing hazard communication
- Sign and label manufacturers creating compliant pictograms
- Machinery and equipment designers integrating safety markings
- Training and technical documentation authors providing supporting text
- National standards bodies and compliance officers responsible for adoption
Related standards
- ISO 7010 (main standard for registered safety signs)
- ISO 3864‑4 (colourimetric and photometric properties for safety colours)
- ISO 9186‑1 (graphical symbol legibility and comprehensibility testing)
- IEC 60417 (registered graphical symbols database; referenced IEC numbers for P075 and W080)
This amendment helps organizations maintain consistent, standardized hazard communication by expanding the ISO 7010 symbol set and providing implementation guidance for new pictograms.
