Overview

SIST EN 12312-20:2026 is a European standard for aircraft ground support equipment focused on electrical ground power units (GPUs). It defines technical requirements intended to reduce significant hazards during the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of ground power equipment when used as intended, including reasonably foreseeable misuse.

This standard is relevant to manufacturers, airport operators, maintenance teams, airlines, and service companies that rely on safe and reliable ground power equipment for aircraft. It also reflects performance needs recognized by authorities and industry stakeholders.

The document applies to:

  • Self-propelled or towable ground power units
  • Ground power equipment mounted on other GSE
  • Ground power accessories, including those for fixed equipment

It does not cover the aircraft on-board electrical system, general supply system characteristics, or noise and vibration requirements.

Key Topics

The standard addresses a wide range of safety and functional requirements for electrical ground power units, with emphasis on hazard reduction and safe use on the apron.

Main focus areas include:

  • General safety requirements aligned with the wider EN 1915 series
  • Stability and strength considerations
  • Power source safety, including diesel-powered, turbine-powered, and battery-based systems
  • Cables and connectors, including suitability for ramp conditions and protection against damage
  • Controls and emergency stop functions
  • Marking, safety marking, and operating instructions
  • Verification of requirements through testing and measurement where appropriate

The standard also identifies significant hazards such as collision risks, electric shock, entanglement, burns, and issues related to emergency escape and cable handling. These measures support safer operations in demanding airport environments.

Applications

SIST EN 12312-20:2026 is designed for practical use across the aviation ground support sector. It supports organizations involved in the design, manufacture, procurement, and operation of electrical ground power equipment.

Typical application areas include:

  • Airport ground operations
  • Aircraft servicing and turnaround support
  • Maintenance and inspection of ground power units
  • Integration of ground power equipment on mobile GSE
  • Use of accessories and cable handling systems for fixed installations

For organizations seeking compliance and safer operations, this standard helps establish a structured basis for risk reduction, product design, and user information. It is especially useful where electrical ground power units must operate reliably across varied airport conditions and aircraft service scenarios.

Related Standards

SIST EN 12312-20:2026 is intended to be used together with related standards in the EN 1915 and ISO families, especially:

  • EN 1915-1:2023 - General safety requirements
  • EN 1915-2:2026 - Stability and strength requirements
  • EN ISO 31915-3:2026 - Vibration-related requirements for vehicles
  • EN 1915-4:2004+A1:2009 - Noise measurement and reduction
  • EN ISO 12100:2010 - Risk assessment and risk reduction
  • EN ISO 13850:2015 - Emergency stop principles
  • EN 60204-1:2018 - Electrical equipment of machines

It also references standards for connectors, batteries, and generating sets, supporting a broader framework for aircraft ground support equipment standards and electrical GPU safety.

Introduction
This document specifies health and safety requirements, as well as some functional and performance
requirements for ground power equipment intended for the electrical supply for aircraft to be used on all
aircraft types commonly in service in civil air transport.
The minimum essential criteria are considered to be of primary importance in providing safe, serviceable,
economical, and practical ground power equipment. Deviations from the recommended criteria should occur
only after careful consideration, extensive testing, risk assessment and thorough service evaluation have
shown alternative methods or conditions to be satisfactory. Such deviations are outside the scope of this
document and a manufacturer should be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of protection.
This document is a Type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100:2010.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and events are covered are
indicated in the scope of this document.
When provisions requirements of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B
standards, the requirements of this type C standard take precedence over the requirements of the other
standards, for machines that have been designed and built according to the requirements of this type C
standard.
