Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 6107-9 was prepared by Technical Committee
lSO/TC 147, Water quality, Subcommittee SC 1, Terminology.
IS0 6107 consists of nine parts, under the general title Water quality -
Vocabulary. The different parts do not have individual titles.

Avant-propos
L’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une federation
mondiale d’organismes nationaux de normalisation (comites membres de
I’ISO). L’elaboration des Normes internationales est en general confiee aux
comites techniques de I’ISO. Chaque comite membre interesse par une
etude a le droit de faire pat-tie du comite technique tree a cet effet. Les
organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouvernemen-
tales, en liaison avec I’ISO participent egalement aux travaux. L’ISO colla-
bore etroitement avec la Commission electrotechnique internationale (CEI)
en ce qui concerne la normalisation electrotechnique.
Les projets de Normes internationales adopt& par les comites techniques
sont soumis aux comites membres pour vote. Leur publication comme
Normes internationales requiert I’approbation de 75 % au moins des
comites membres votants.
La Norme internationale IS0 6107-9 a ete elaboree par le comite technique
lSO/TC 147, Qua/it& de I’eau, sous-comite SC 1, Terminologie.
L’ISO 9107 comprend neuf parties presentees sous le titre general Qua/it6

Introduction
Parts 1 to 8 of IS0 6107 contain definitions for 550 terms which appear in
specifications of ISO/TC 147, Water quality. The definitions have been
formulated to provide standardized terminoloy for the characterization of
water quality. Terms in this vocabulary may be identical to those in
vocabularies of other international organizations, but the definitions may
differ because they have been formulated for different purposes. Part 9
consists of an alphabetical list and subject index of all terms in parts 1 to 8,
and will be updated as bnd when any of parts 1 to 8 are revised. The nine
parts are not combined into one vocabulary document in order to facilitate
and expedite regular revision and updating.

Introduction
Les parties 1 fi 8 de I’ISO 6107 contiennent les definitions de 553 termes
qui apparaissent, dans les specifications de l’lSO/TC 147, Qua/it6 de I’eau.
Les definitions ont ete formulees afin de constituer une terminologie
normalisee dans le domaine de la caracterisation de la qualite de l’eau. Les
