BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 538, Conventional Signs to be Used in Schemes for the Ins-
tallations of Pipeline Systems in Ships, was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Ship-
building Details, the Secretariat of which is held by the Nederlands Normalisatie-instituut
(NNI).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1956 and led, in 1962, to the
adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In March 1963, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 562) was circulated to all the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial
nature, by the following Member Bodies:

INTRODUCTION
This IS0 Recommendation covers conventional signs to be used in schemes for installations
for ship pipelines. *
The symbols given in the Tables have been classified in the following manner:
1. General conventional signs
2. Pipes and pipe joints
3. Valves, gate valves, cocks and flaps
4. Control and regulation parts
5. Appliances
6. Fittings
7. Indicating and measuring instruments
The general conventional signs concern symbols representing principal parts and appliances.
The other signs are all derived from the general basic signs.

La Recommandation ISO/R 538, Signes conventionnels ti utiliser dans les schimas des ins-
tallations de tuyauteries des navires, a ete elaboree par le Comite Technique ISO/TC 8, Construc-
tions navales, dont le Secretariat est assure par le Nederlands Normalisatie-instituut (NNI).
Les travaux relatifs a cette question furent entrepris par le Comite Technique en 1956 et
aboutirent en 1962 a l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En mars 1963, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (No 562) fut soumis a l’enquete de tous
les Comites Membres de I’ISO. 11 fut approuve, sous reserve de quelques modifications d’ordre
redactionnel, par les Comites Membres suivants :
