Overview

IEC 60063:1963 is an essential international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the preferred number series for fixed resistors and capacitors used in electronic equipment. This second edition, incorporating Amendments No. 1 (1967) and No. 2 (1977), provides standardized values for fixed resistors and capacitors with ordinary and close tolerance levels. The purpose is to achieve global harmonization in electronic component values, facilitating manufacturing, procurement, and design consistency across countries.

This standard recommends specific series of numbers-known as preferred number series-that are optimized for common resistor and capacitor tolerances, ranging from ±5% down to tighter tolerances for precision components. Its guidance helps manufacturers and designers select values that balance component availability, cost efficiency, and performance reliability.

Key Topics

  • Preferred Number Series for Resistors and Capacitors: IEC 60063 specifies recommended series such as E3, E6, E12, and E24, which correspond to progressively finer graduations of component values aligned with respective tolerance classes.

  • Tolerance Classes: Values in the standard are organized by typical tolerance levels. For example:

    • E24 series is associated with ±5% tolerance,
    • E12 for ±10%,
    • E6 for ±20%, and
    • E3 for tolerances greater than ±20%.
  • Standardized Value Tables: The publication includes detailed tables listing preferred values that cover a broad range of resistances and capacitances, expressed in ohms and picofarads, respectively, along with their decimal multiples and submultiples.

  • Historical Context and Amendments: The standard was initially published in 1963, with updates accounting for advances in electronic component manufacturing and evolving industry needs. The amendments added series E48 and E96 to better cover close tolerance components for specialized applications.

  • International Consensus: The development involved multiple national committees worldwide, reflecting collective agreement to promote unification and standardization for the electronics industry globally.

Applications

IEC 60063 is widely applied in the design, manufacturing, and procurement of fixed resistors and capacitors in electronic equipment, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability of components. Key practical applications include:

  • Circuit Design: Engineers use preferred number series to select resistor and capacitor values that meet functional requirements while ensuring availability of components in the market.

  • Manufacturing Standardization: Component manufacturers align production batches to IEC 60063 series, simplifying inventory control and reducing complexity.

  • Quality Control and Specification: The standard supports defining product specifications for electronic devices, guaranteeing components conform to recognized tolerance and value ranges.

  • Inventory Management: Distributors and suppliers organize stocks based on preferred series, optimizing the supply chain logistics.

  • International Trade and Compliance: Adoption of IEC 60063 facilitates global commerce of electronic components by standardizing specifications that cross national borders.

Related Standards

  • ISO/TC 19: Preferred Numbers: IEC 60063 closely relates to ISO’s standardization efforts on preferred numbers, ensuring compatibility with a broader framework of numerical series across industries.

  • IEC Technical Committee 40 Standards: Additional IEC publications concerning capacitors and resistors for electronic equipment complement IEC 60063, offering detailed performance and test methods.

  • Component Tolerance Standards: Standards defining tolerance classes (e.g., IEC 60062) provide specifications that correspond with the preferred values recommended in IEC 60063.

  • Electropedia by IEC: The online IEC Electropedia offers comprehensive terminologies and definitions relevant to resistors, capacitors, and preferred number series, enriching understanding and implementation.

INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION
____________
PREFERRED NUMBER SERIES FOR RESISTORS
AND CAPACITORS
FOREWORD
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
3) In order to promote this international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees
having as yet no national rules, when preparing such rules, should use the IEC recommendations as the
fundamental basis for these rules in so far as national conditions will permit.
4) The desirability is recognized of extending international agreement on these matters through an endeavour to
harmonize national standardization rules with these recommendations in so far as national conditions will
permit. The National Committees pledge their influence towards that end.

PREFACE
This recommendation has been prepared by IEC Technical Committee 40: Resistors and
Capacitors.
During the discussions of IEC Technical Committee 12: Radio-communication, at the meeting
in Stockholm in 1948, it was unanimously agreed that one of the most urgent items for
international standardization was the series of preferred values for resistors and for
capacitors up to 0,1 µF.
10 -system, but it appeared
It would have been desirable to standardize for these series the
that in several countries the 10 -system had been adopted for the above mentioned
components because of standardization of tolerances at 5, 10 and 20 %. As it was not practicable
to change the commercial practice in these countries, the 10 -system was adopted.
The Committee expressed regret that, on account of the existing situation, it was necessary to
recommend the 10 -system, although it would have been more consistent with ISO practice
to use the 10 -system.
The proposal for the series E 6, E 12 and E 24 of preferred values was accepted in Paris in
1950 and subsequently published as IEC 60063 (First edition).
The contents of this publication are now reprinted as Section One of the present publication.

Recommendation.
