Overview
EN 10357:2022 is a key European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies the requirements for austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, and ferritic longitudinally fusion welded stainless steel tubes. These tubes are primarily intended for use in the food and chemical industries where hygiene, corrosion resistance, and material quality are crucial. The standard updates and supersedes EN 10357:2013, ensuring compliance with the latest technical and manufacturing developments.
Key aspects such as dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, surface characteristics, marking, and testing procedures are detailed in the document, enabling manufacturers and purchasers to ensure consistent quality and compatibility with industrial processes.
Key Topics
Dimensions and Tolerances:
Specified preferred and alternative external and internal tube diameters and tolerances, including wall thickness and ovality. Straightness deviations must not exceed 2 mm per meter. Dimensions cater to a broad range, from 13 mm up to 254 mm outside diameter.Materials:
Covers materials classified as austenitic, austenitic-ferritic, and ferritic stainless steels in accordance with EN 10028-7. Material selection guidelines support appropriate performance in food-grade and chemical environments.Manufacturing Process:
Tubes must be produced from cold rolled plates or strips using longitudinal fusion welding, with options for filler metal. Surface treatments include pickling, passivation, mechanical polishing, and bright annealing to reduce surface roughness and improve corrosion resistance.Surface Characteristics and Roughness:
Surface roughness requirements differ depending on manufacturing class and tube face (internal or external). For example, internal tube surfaces typically require Ra values below 0.8 to 1.6 µm to maintain hygiene standards.Testing and Inspection:
Testing is in line with EN 10217-7 for austenitic grades and EN 10296-2 for ferritic materials, covering corrosion resistance, dimensional conformity, and surface roughness. Inspection certificates (3.1 per EN 10204) must accompany deliveries, confirming material and test compliance.Marking and Traceability:
Each tube must be clearly marked with manufacturer details, steel grade, dimensions, heat number, execution process symbol, and inspection marks to ensure traceability throughout the supply chain.Packaging and Transport:
Tubes are delivered dry to prevent contamination, with protective PE sleeves for mechanically polished tubes as standard unless otherwise agreed.
Applications
EN 10357:2022 stainless steel tubes are indispensable in industries demanding high hygiene standards and chemical resistance:
Food Industry:
Used for piping systems, heat exchangers, and processing equipment where contamination prevention and corrosion resistance are vital.Chemical Industry:
Suitable for conveying aggressive chemicals and fluids due to their precise material specification and surface finish, minimizing corrosion and contamination.Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Sectors:
Although not explicitly mentioned, the standard’s strict surface roughness and material requirements support applications requiring sanitary conditions.Pressure Vessels and Process Systems:
Compliance with related pressure and mechanical standards ensures utilization in pressure-containing components and structural applications.
