Overview
EN 1607:2013 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the procedures and equipment required to determine the tensile strength of thermal insulating products perpendicular to their faces. This standard is specifically designed for building applications involving thermal insulating materials. It ensures consistent, reliable measurement of tensile strength, an important mechanical property impacting the durability and performance of insulation products used in construction.
The standard replaces the earlier EN 1607:1996 version with minor editorial revisions and clarifications, maintaining technical consistency while improving usability. It supports a broad suite of related standards that collectively define the dimensions, physical, and mechanical properties of thermal insulating products.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: EN 1607 applies exclusively to thermal insulating products used in buildings to measure tensile strength perpendicular to the product faces.
- Test Specimen Preparation: Specimens are taken as prisms with square cross-sections, preserving original thickness including facings or coatings to reflect realistic product performance.
- Apparatus Requirements:
- A tensile testing machine with constant crosshead speed (10 ± 1 mm/min) and force measurement accuracy of ±1%.
- Rigid self-aligning plates or blocks to prevent uneven stress distribution.
- Compatible adhesives that do not damage or reinforce the product surfaces.
- Test Procedure:
- Specimens are conditioned under controlled temperature (23 ± 5 °C) and humidity for consistency.
- They are attached to rigid plates and pulled until failure; maximum tensile force is recorded.
- Calculation: Tensile strength is calculated by dividing the maximum recorded tensile force by the specimen’s cross-sectional area.
- Accuracy and Repeatability: The method has an estimated 95% repeatability limit of about 5% and reproducibility limit of approximately 15%, ensuring robust and comparable results.
- Reporting Requirements:
- Detailed product identification.
- Test conditions, deviations, specimen details.
- Individual and averaged test results.
Applications
EN 1607:2013 is essential for verifying quality and mechanical performance in the following areas:
- Construction and Building Insulation: Ensures that insulating materials installed in walls, roofs, and floors have sufficient tensile strength to withstand handling, installation, and operational stresses without failure.
- Product Development and Quality Control: Manufacturers use this test to optimize formulations and production processes, ensuring compliance with product standards and customer requirements.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports conformity with European construction product regulations, facilitating market access and harmonized building practices across member states.
- Performance Assessment: Protects against product failure in service conditions, enhancing building safety, energy efficiency, and durability.
