(Main)Fire resistance tests for loadbearing elements - Part 3: Beams
Fire resistance tests for loadbearing elements - Part 3: Beams
This part of EN 1365 specifies a method for determining the fire resistance of beams with or without applied fire protection systems and with or without cavities. This standard is used in conjunction with prEN 1363-1. Beams which are part of a floor construction are tested with the floor construction as described in prEN 1365-2 and are subject to evaluation of integrity and insulation. General guidance on this method of test is given in annex A.

Overview
EN 1365-3:1999 - "Fire resistance tests for loadbearing elements - Part 3: Beams" (CEN) specifies a standardized method to determine the fire resistance of beams. The standard covers beams tested with or without applied fire protection systems and with or without cavities. It is intended to be used together with prEN 1363-1 (general fire resistance test methods). Where beams form part of a floor construction, testing is carried out in conjunction with prEN 1365-2 and includes assessment of integrity and insulation. General guidance on the test method is provided in Annex A.
Key Topics
- Scope of testing: Methods for testing beams as loadbearing elements under prescribed fire conditions (with/without protection and cavities).
- Combined testing: Requirements when beams are part of a floor - coordinated testing and evaluation with prEN 1365-2.
- Evaluation criteria: Assessment of loadbearing capacity and, when applicable, integrity and insulation performance.
- Use with prEN 1363-1: The standard relies on general test procedures and furnace conditions defined in the overarching fire test standard.
- Guidance annex: Annex A offers interpretative and practical guidance for conducting the beam fire resistance test.
Applications
EN 1365-3 is used to produce reliable, comparable data on beam performance in fire and to support decisions in design, compliance, and product development:
- Structural engineers - to verify that beam designs meet required fire resistance for safety and code compliance.
- Fire test laboratories - to perform standardized fire resistance tests on beams and assemblies.
- Manufacturers of beams and fire protection systems - to validate and certify products (intumescent coatings, encasements, fireproofing boards).
- Regulatory authorities and certifiers - to assess conformity with national building regulations and European standards.
- Architects and contractors - to select appropriate beam types and protection strategies for building projects.
Related Standards
- prEN 1363-1 - General requirements and procedures for fire resistance tests (used alongside EN 1365-3).
- prEN 1365-2 - Fire resistance tests for floors - relevant when beams are tested as part of floor constructions.
- Other parts of the EN 1365 series and regional/adopted variants (e.g., SIST EN 1365-3) may apply for specific jurisdictions.
EN 1365-3 is a key reference for anyone involved in assessing the fire-resistance of building elements, ensuring consistent testing and reporting of beam performance under fire conditions.
