Coil coated metals - Test methods - Part 13: Resistance to accelerated ageing by the use of heat
This Part of EN 13523 describes the procedure for determining the behaviour of an organic coating on a metallic substrate (flat or bent specimens) when submitted to accelerated ageing by heating at a defined temperature for a defined period of time. It is not possible to test heat resistance in such way as to control all possible conditions of use. The aim of this test is therefore to furnish the basic test methods for the effect of heat. NOTE: Special applications may require that properties other than those mentioned in this part of EN 13523 be checked.

Overview
EN 13523-13:2014 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies test methods for evaluating the resistance of organic coatings on coil coated metals to accelerated ageing caused by heat exposure. This standard applies to metallic substrates, both flat and bent specimens, and outlines procedures to assess changes in coating properties when subjected to elevated temperatures over a defined period. It serves as a fundamental method for determining heat resistance, a critical factor in the durability and performance of coil coated metals used in various industrial applications.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose
Defines test procedures to simulate accelerated ageing by heating coil coated metal specimens to evaluate organic coating behaviour under thermal stress. - Test Procedures
Includes methods for:- Flat specimens exposed to heat.
- Specimens bent prior to ageing.
- Specimens bent after exposure to heat.
- Test Conditions
Specifies use of air circulation ovens maintaining temperature within ±5% of the set point.
Conditioning under controlled ambient conditions (23 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 5% relative humidity) before and after heat exposure. - Measurement Parameters
- Gloss and colour changes measured according to EN 13523-2 and EN 13523-3.
- Resistance to cracking evaluated post-bending per EN 13523-7.
- Adhesion testing using pressure-sensitive adhesive tape where applicable.
- Specimen Preparation and Sampling
Test and reference specimens must be taken from the same coated coil to ensure accuracy, with adequate sample quantity for all required tests. - Result Expression and Reporting
Results are expressed as differences between test and reference specimens for gloss, colour, cracking resistance, and adhesion loss. Test reports detail product identification, test conditions, bending sequence, results, and anomalies.
Applications
EN 13523-13:2014 is essential for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and end-users of coil coated metals, providing a standardized approach to:
- Assess thermal ageing behaviour of organic paint systems applied on metals used in construction, automotive, and appliance industries.
- Validate product durability under heat stress conditions encountered during production, storage, transport, or end-use.
- Support product development by comparing performance of different coatings under accelerated heat ageing.
- Ensure compliance with customer and regulatory requirements for long-term coating integrity and appearance.
- Facilitate dispute resolution through precise and reproducible testing conditions and reporting.
Related Standards
EN 13523-13:2014 complements the broader EN 13523 series focused on coil coated metals, including:
- EN 13523-0: General introduction to coil coated metal test methods.
- EN 13523-2: Test method for measuring specular gloss, crucial for evaluating surface appearance changes after ageing.
- EN 13523-3: Colour difference measurement methods supporting accurate assessment of coating discoloration.
- EN 13523-7: Resistance to cracking during bending (T-bend test), important for combined mechanical and thermal stress evaluation.
Additional normative references include EN 23270 (conditioning temperature and humidity) and EN 60454-2 (adhesive tape test methods) which support precise and consistent testing procedures.
By adhering to EN 13523-13:2014, industry professionals can reliably measure the heat resistance of organic coatings on coil coated metals, ensuring high-quality performance and extended service life of coated metal products exposed to thermal ageing conditions.
