General Information
Overview
EN ISO 16610-30:2017 (ISO 16610-30:2015) is a Geometrical Product Specification (GPS) standard that specifies the basic concepts of robust profile filters used in profile filtration and surface metrology. Adopted by CEN, this part of the ISO 16610 series defines terminology, robustness concepts, and foundational methods for filters that are insensitive to data anomalies (outliers, scratches, steps). It is a conceptual standard intended to guide correct selection and interpretation of robust profile filtering in surface texture measurement.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose
- Establishes the fundamental concepts and vocabulary for robust profile filters within GPS (filtration of profile data).
- Robustness
- Defines robustness as the insensitivity of output data to specific phenomena in input profiles (e.g., outliers, slope/step/spike discontinuities).
- Classifies profile discontinuities: slope, step, spike.
- Metrics and norms
- Introduces profile metrics and norms used to quantify differences between profiles: L1-norm (absolute deviation), L2-norm (least squares), L∞-norm (Chebyshev), and discrete equivalents (l1, l2, l∞).
- Statistical estimators
- Describes robust statistical estimators including M-estimators (use of an influence function to weight points) and mentions Bayesian estimators as alternative robust approaches.
- Pre-processing methods
- Covers pre-processing techniques that support robustness such as scale-space and wavelet pre-processing to reduce influence of discontinuities or noise.
- Normative references
- References related GPS filtration guidance: ISO 16610-1, ISO 16610-20 and ISO/IEC Guide 99.
Applications
- Surface metrology and roughness analysis - applying robust profile filters to obtain reliable roughness parameters when profiles include scratches, dust, or measurement artefacts.
- Manufacturing quality control - robust filtration helps prevent outliers from skewing acceptance/rejection decisions in production inspection.
- Instrument and software vendors - guidance for implementing robust filtering algorithms in profilometers and analysis software.
- Standards development and metrology labs - provides a conceptual foundation for test methods, verification procedures, and calibration strategies.
Who uses it: metrology engineers, quality managers, instrumentation manufacturers, R&D teams, and standards professionals focused on surface texture and profile filtration.
Related Standards
- ISO 16610 series (selected): Part 1 (Overview), Part 20/21/22 (Linear profile filters, Gaussian/spline), Part 31/32 (Robust regression and spline filters), Part 28/29 (End effects, spline wavelets), and are relevant for practical implementations of robust profile filtration.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.

Introduction
This part of ISO 16610 is a geometrical product specification (GPS) standard and is to be regarded as a
general GPS standard (see ISO 14638). It influences chain links C and F of all chains of standards.
The ISO/GPS matrix model given in ISO 14638 gives an overview of the ISO/GPS system of which this
part of ISO 16610 is a part. The fundamental rules of ISO/GPS given in ISO 8015 apply to this part of
ISO 16610 and the default decision rules given in ISO 14253-1 apply to specifications made in accordance
with this part of ISO 16610, unless otherwise indicated.
For more detailed information of the relation of this part of ISO 16610 to the GPS matrix model, see
Annex D.
This part of ISO 16610 develops the basic concepts for robust profile filters.
