Candles - Specification for sooting behaviour
This document specifies requirements and the test method for evaluating the sooting behaviour of burning indoor candles. It is applicable to single wick candles with a diameter up to 100 mm or equivalent cross sectional area intended to be burned indoors.
NOTE Single wick candles with a diameter above 100 mm or equivalent cross sectional area and multiwick candles cannot be evaluated with this test method for technical reasons. Evaluation of the visible release of soot is a possibility for these candles.

Overview
EN 15426:2018 - "Candles - Specification for sooting behaviour" (CEN) defines a standardized test and acceptance criteria to evaluate the sooting behaviour of burning indoor candles. The standard applies to single-wick candles with a diameter up to 100 mm (or equivalent cross‑sectional area). It specifies the test setup, sampling, test conditions and reporting so that manufacturers and test laboratories can quantify soot emissions reliably. The standard supersedes EN 15426:2007 and is maintained by CEN/TC 369.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limitations
- Applicable to single‑wick indoor candles ≤ 100 mm diameter.
- Candles > 100 mm diameter or multiwick candles cannot be assessed using this method; visible soot release may be evaluated separately.
- Acceptance criterion
- The average soot index per hour from three tests must be less than 1.0/h.
- Test principle
- Soot emitted by a burning candle is collected on a heat‑resistant glass plate placed inside a wire mesh cylinder; light attenuation through the soiled plate is measured in a measuring chamber to derive a soot index.
- Essential equipment
- Wire mesh cylinder with adjustable stand (open screening area (60 ± 5) % per ISO 9044), two cylinder sizes for different candle diameters.
- Measurement unit (light source, light‑reflective chamber, photodiode and indicator instrument). First operation and calibration procedures are given in Annex A.
- Heat‑resistant glass plates (100 × 100 mm, thickness 3.5–4.5 mm) and calibration disk (neutral density glass).
- Test procedure highlights
- Minimum of three samples representative of the commercial product.
- Prepare samples per manufacturer instructions (wick trim, measure dimensions/mass); sample and room temperatures at (20 ± 5) °C, draught‑free environment.
- Defined stabilizing period, followed by measuring periods; remove the glass plate before extinguishing to avoid afterglow contamination.
- Additional guidance: selection/setup of wire mesh (Annex C) and hourly fuel consumption calculation (Annex B).
- Reporting
- Full test conditions, timings, dimensions, temperatures and the soot index results are recorded in the test report.
Applications and who uses it
- Candle manufacturers - product design, quality control and safety verification.
- Independent test laboratories - standardized testing for certification and compliance.
- Retailers and procurement - supplier validation and product safety checks.
- Regulatory bodies and standards organizations - consumer safety assessment and comparative evaluations.
- R&D teams - formulation and wick/design optimization to reduce soot.
