Railway applications - Fire protection on railway vehicles - Part 5: Fire safety requirements for electrical equipment including that of trolley buses, track guided buses and magnetic levitation vehicles
This Part of EN 45545 specifies the fire safety requirements for electrical equipment on railway vehicles, including that of trolley buses, track guided buses and magnetic levitation vehicles.
The measures and requirements, specified in this European Standard meet the objective of protecting passengers and staff in railway vehicles in the event of a fire on board by:
- lowering the risk of starting a fire both during operation and as a result of technical defect and/or malfunction of the electrical equipment,
- ensuring that electrical emergency equipment continues to be functional until evacuation is complete
(see EN 45545-6).
– die Gefahr des Ausbruches von Feuer während des Betriebes und als Ergebnis eines technischen Fehlers und/oder des Versagens der elektrischen Ausrüstung auf ein Mindestmaß reduziert wird;
- en réduisant les risques d’ignition à la fois lors de l’exploitation et comme résultant d’un défaut technique et/ou fonctionnel de l’équipement électrique;
(glej standard EN 45545-6).

Overview
EN 45545-5:2013+A1:2015 - part of the CEN series “Railway applications - Fire protection on railway vehicles” - specifies fire safety requirements for electrical equipment on railway vehicles, including trolley buses, track-guided buses and magnetic levitation vehicles. Its purpose is to reduce ignition risk from electrical systems and to ensure that electrical emergency equipment remains functional until evacuation is complete (see EN 45545-6). The standard applies to design, installation and maintainability of on-board electrical equipment to protect passengers and staff in the event of fire.
Key Topics
- Scope & Objectives: Lowering fire-start risk from electrical equipment and ensuring emergency electrical systems operate through evacuation.
- Design requirements:
- Overload protection: selection and setting of protection (consider short-circuit currents, source and line impedances, breaking capability).
- Cabling: requirements for metallic ducts/conduits, earth bonding, mechanical protection, and arc extinguishing devices where protection response is slower than 250 ms.
- Electrical arc protection: types of arc containment - arc splash barriers, Type A (short-duration arcs) and Type B (fault arcs) - with associated material and fire-resistance classifications referenced to EN 45545-2 and EN 45545-3.
- Enclosures & partitions: protection from external influences, contact with live parts, venting of explosive gases, and interaction with fire barriers required by EN 45545-3.
- Batteries: venting to exterior, insulation and protection of battery circuits, and rules when poles are not body-bonded (see EN 50547).
- Other components: switchgear, emergency electrical equipment, bonding, resistors/heaters, forced-ventilated equipment, flammable liquids and cable ducts.
- Maintainability & Modifications: maintenance requirements and controls for electrical equipment changes.
- Conformity & Compliance: evaluation of conformity and relationship to EU Directive 2008/57/EC (informative Annex ZA).
Applications / Who Uses It
- Rolling stock designers and OEMs creating traction systems, auxiliary power and control equipment.
- System integrators and electrical engineers responsible for cabling, battery enclosures and switchgear selection.
- Safety and certification engineers preparing conformity assessments and documentation for regulatory compliance.
- Maintenance teams and asset managers defining inspection, modification and repair procedures for on-board electrical equipment.
- Procurement and fleet owners specifying fire-safe electrical equipment and installation practices.
