Overview
EN ISO 17660-2:2006 - Welding of reinforcing steel - Part 2: Non load-bearing welded joints specifies requirements for welding weldable reinforcing steel and stainless reinforcing steel when the welded joints are non load-bearing (i.e., their strength is not accounted for in the structural design). Published by CEN/ISO, the standard applies to workshop and on‑site welding and covers materials, joint design, welding execution, personnel, quality requirements, inspection, examination and testing. Load‑bearing joints are treated separately in ISO 17660‑1.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and definitions
- Applies only to non load‑bearing welded joints (often used as tack welds to hold bars during fabrication, transport and concreting).
- Permitted welding processes
- Includes processes referenced to ISO 4063 (examples: manual metal arc (111), shielded/self‑shielded electrodes (114, 135, 136), resistance spot (21) and projection welding (23)).
- Joint types and dimensions
- Recognises lap joints and cross joints; weld length and throat thickness are to be defined in the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
- Provides recommended bar diameter ranges for different welding processes.
- Materials and consumables
- Applicable to weldable reinforcing steels and stainless reinforcing steels.
- Inspection certificate normally required; carbon equivalent value (CEV), manufacturing route and delivery conditions must be determined prior to welding (with stated exceptions).
- Welding procedure control
- Requires documented WPS and, where applicable, WPQR and welding procedure tests in accordance with the referenced ISO procedure standards.
- Quality and personnel
- Manufacturers must meet quality requirements (ISO 3834‑4 elementary level) and provide welding coordination per ISO 14731 with specific knowledge for reinforcing steel welding.
- Testing, inspection and records
- Defines requirements for production weld tests, examination, destructive/non‑destructive testing of specimens, and keeping a production log.
Practical applications and who uses it
- Useful for reinforcing‑steel fabricators, precast manufacturers, site contractors, welding coordinators, QA/QC managers and structural engineers who need to ensure correct, safe tack or non load‑bearing welds in reinforced concrete works.
- Applies when specifying or verifying welding practices for rebar connections in bridges, buildings, precast elements and refurbishment projects where welds are intended only for positioning.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

Introduction
Reinforcing steel bars are produced by a number of process routes and usually have a ribbed profile. Taking
these issues into account, it is apparent that both the welder and the welding coordinator require a specific
level of skill and job knowledge and that special procedures for quality assurance need to be adopted.

The standard EN ISO 17660-2:2006 addresses the critical aspect of welding non load-bearing welded joints specifically in reinforcing steel, emphasizing its applicability to both weldable reinforcing steel and stainless reinforcing steel. This standard delineates the necessary requirements for the proper materials, design considerations, and execution of welded joints, thereby ensuring that those performing these tasks are adequately qualified and that the quality of work meets established benchmarks. One of the prominent strengths of this standard is its comprehensive nature; it not only outlines the technical specifications for welding but also addresses the competency of welding personnel. This dual focus is essential to safeguard the integrity of non load-bearing structures and contributes to the overall safety in construction practices. Moreover, EN ISO 17660-2:2006 emphasizes quality assurance through its requirements for examination and testing of welded joints, reinforcing the importance of maintaining stringent oversight throughout the welding process. This is particularly relevant in workshop and site conditions, where adherence to such standards can significantly mitigate risks associated with welding operations. The relevance of this standard extends beyond mere compliance; it serves as a foundational document for engineers and technicians involved in construction and infrastructure where non load-bearing welded joints are utilized. By adhering to these guidelines, stakeholders can ensure that their work meets not only industry standards but also practical performance expectations. In conclusion, EN ISO 17660-2:2006 is an essential standard that offers clear, detailed instructions for the welding of non load-bearing welded joints in reinforcing steel, enhancing both the quality and safety of construction practices while establishing a benchmark for excellence in the field.
