Overview
prEN ISO 17660-2 (ISO/DIS 17660-2:2017) is a draft standard addressing welding of reinforcing steel - Part 2: Non load‑bearing welded joints. It defines the framework for welding processes, qualification, testing and inspection specifically for welded joints that are not intended to transfer structural loads. Note: the CEN work item was later abandoned following ISO notification (2018-06-18), so this document remained a draft and users should verify current status with their national standards body or ISO.
Key topics and requirements
The draft provides structured requirements and guidance on the following technical topics:
- Scope, terms and definitions relevant to reinforcing‑bar welding and non load‑bearing joints.
- Welding processes permitted and referenced (including processes identified in the draft such as 21 and 23).
- Types of non load‑bearing joints and general rules for their design and execution.
- Materials: parent reinforcing steels, inspection documentation and welding consumables.
- Quality requirements for production and acceptance of non load‑bearing welds.
- Welder and operator qualifications and the role of a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
- Welding procedures: test specimens, examination and testing, acceptance criteria, and qualification ranges.
- Production testing and inspection: production weld test, execution, inspection, production log and reporting.
- Informative annexes covering test specimens, evaluation of test results, production log examples, and diameter‑combination examples for cross joints.
Applications and who uses it
This standard is relevant for practitioners involved in construction and reinforced‑concrete fabrication where welded reinforcing bars are used but the welds are not intended to carry primary structural loads. Typical users include:
- Structural and civil engineers specifying reinforcement detailing
- Rebar fabricators and welding contractors
- Welding coordinators and quality managers in precast and in‑situ concrete production
- Inspectors and testing laboratories verifying welds and procedures
- Standards bodies and code developers referencing reinforcement welding practices
Using the guidance helps ensure consistent weld quality, traceability (production log, test reports), and qualified welding procedures/WPS even when welds are non load‑bearing.
Related standards
- ISO 17660‑1 (Part 1) covers load‑bearing welded joints of reinforcing steel and is the complementary part for structural welds.
- Other relevant documents include normative references listed in the draft (terms, symbols and process classifications). Check ISO and national standards for the latest, published versions.
For current status and to obtain the latest normative text, consult ISO or your national standards body (ICS 25.160.10 - welding processes and welding).

require a specific level of skill and job knowledge and that special procedures for quality assurance
need to be adopted.
1 Scope
This part of ISO 17660 is applicable to the welding of weldable reinforcing steel and stainless
reinforcing steel of non load-bearing welded joints, in workshops or on site. It specifies requirements
for materials, design and execution of welded joints, welding personnel, quality requirements,
examination and testing.
Load-bearing welded joints are covered by ISO 17660-1.
