Cranes - Requirements for container handling spreaders

This European Standard specifies safety requirements for spreaders used with cranes designed for the purpose of handling ISO containers based on ISO 668 including other lengths such as 45 ft. The connection between the spreader and the container is by the use of twistlocks that engage into the container’s upper corner castings.
The standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to container handling spreaders, when used as intended and under conditions foreseen by the manufacturer (see Clause 4).
The spreader is interfaced to the crane’s control and safety system.
This European Standard does not cover the following types of spreaders:
-   hand operated spreaders (without external power supply);
-   bottom lift grapple spreaders used for swapbodies and road trailers.
This European Standard does not deal with the lifting of persons.
This European Standard is applicable to spreaders which are manufactured after the date of approval by CEN of this standard.

-   handbetriebene Spreader (ohne externe Energieversorgung);

— spreader commandé manuellement (sans alimentation externe) ;

Overview

EN 15056:2006+A1:2009 - Cranes: Requirements for container handling spreaders - is a CEN (European) safety standard that specifies safety, design and verification requirements for spreaders used with cranes to handle ISO containers (including non‑standard lengths such as 45 ft). The standard covers spreaders that connect to container upper corner castings using twistlocks and that are interfaced with the crane’s control and safety systems. EN 15056 applies to spreaders manufactured after CEN approval and excludes hand‑operated spreaders, bottom‑lift grapple spreaders for swap‑bodies/road trailers and any equipment intended for lifting persons.

Key Topics

  • Scope and terminology: Definitions for fixed and telescopic spreaders, mid‑frames, end beams, flippers, twistlocks, landing pins, twin lift arrangements and modes of control (manual/automatic).
  • Safety requirements: Addresses structural strength, stability, mechanical hazards (crushing, break‑up), and risks from unexpected start‑up or control failures.
  • Twistlock system: Requirements for twistlocks (fixed and floating), mechanical blockading, locking/unlocking behavior and associated interlocks.
  • Mechanical elements: Design and verification of telescopic beams, beam locks, flippers (gather guides) and landing pins with electrical indication for correct landing.
  • Control, electrical and hydraulic systems: Requirements for electrical/electronic control interfaces to the crane, stop actuators, emergency stop arrangements and hydraulic system safety.
  • Verification and testing: Proof‑loading, inspection, functional tests and verification methods to demonstrate conformity with safety requirements.
  • Information for use: Marking, manuals, maintenance instructions, operational guidance (including special topics such as twin lifts, damaged or non‑standard containers).

Applications and Who Uses It

EN 15056 is used to ensure safe design, manufacture, operation and verification of container handling spreaders. Typical users:

  • Spreader manufacturers - design and testing to meet regulatory safety requirements.
  • Crane builders and system integrators - ensuring safe interface between spreader and crane control/safety systems.
  • Port and terminal operators - procurement specs, safe operation procedures and maintenance planning.
  • Inspection bodies, test labs and certifiers - proof loading, conformity assessment and type approval.
  • Health & safety engineers - risk assessments, operator instructions and safety documentation.

Related Standards

Relevant cross‑references and normative documents commonly used with EN 15056:

  • ISO 668 (container classification, dimensions and ratings)
  • EN ISO 12100 (machine safety - basic principles)
  • EN 13001‑1 / EN 13001‑2 (crane general design and load actions)
  • EN 60204‑32 (electrical equipment of hoisting machines)
  • EN 12644‑1 (crane information for use and testing)

EN 15056 is a practical, safety‑focused standard for anyone specifying, building, operating or inspecting container handling spreaders and forms part of a suite of crane and machinery safety standards.
