Standard Practice for Sampling of Expanded Polystyrene Geofoam Specimens
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This practice provides guidance on sampling of EPS geofoam in order to determine compliance to Specification D6817/D6817M.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice provides guidance on the location, frequency, and method of sampling representative specimens from large blocks of expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam.
1.2 This practice is not intended to replace professional judgment, nor should this guide be applied without consideration of a project’s many unique aspects.
1.3 The word “standard” in the title of this guide means only that this guide has been approved through the ASTM International consensus process.
1.4 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure conformance with the standard, each system shall be used independently of the other, and values from the two systems shall not be combined.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D7557/D7557M-09(2021) - Standard Practice for Sampling of Expanded Polystyrene Geofoam Specimens provides essential guidelines for obtaining representative test samples from large blocks of expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam. Published by ASTM International, this practice supports manufacturers, engineers, and quality control professionals in determining conformity with Specification ASTM D6817/D6817M, which covers the requirements for rigid cellular polystyrene geofoam. Adhering to this standard enhances reliability, project performance, and regulatory compliance when using EPS geofoam in geotechnical and civil engineering applications.
Key Topics
- Sampling Guidance: Details on how to select the locations, frequency, and number of specimens required for accurate assessment of EPS geofoam blocks, both for initial and ongoing quality control.
- Representative Sampling: Emphasizes the importance of taking specimens from various regions of the block (corners, center, different heights) to reflect the true quality of the manufactured geofoam lot.
- SI and Inch-Pound Units: Provides clear instructions to apply either SI units or inch-pound units independently to prevent inconsistencies in measurement and reporting.
- Testing Compliance: Specifies that all specimen testing must comply with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements for laboratory competence and follow defined procedures in ASTM D6817/D6817M.
- Quality Control: Outlines procedures for initial and ongoing sampling across production lots, ensuring that EPS geofoam consistently meets structural, safety, and performance criteria.
- Safety and Regulatory Considerations: Addresses the responsibility of users to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and observe applicable regulations when conducting sampling.
Applications
The ASTM D7557/D7557M standard is crucial wherever expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam is used in construction and infrastructure projects, enabling professionals to:
- Ensure the quality and uniformity of EPS geofoam supplied for lightweight fill, embankment stabilization, roadway or bridge support, and landscaping.
- Identify and address variability within large EPS geofoam blocks, reducing the risk of unexpected settlement or performance issues in the field.
- Streamline quality assurance and documentation for compliance with project specifications and industry regulations.
- Facilitate communication and agreement between suppliers and purchasers about acceptable sampling and testing procedures, promoting transparency and accountability.
Related Standards
For effective implementation of EPS geofoam sampling and testing, refer to these associated documents:
- ASTM D6817/D6817M - Specification for Rigid Cellular Polystyrene Geofoam. Defines the physical property requirements for EPS geofoam materials.
- ASTM D4439 - Terminology for Geosynthetics. Provides standard definitions for terms used in geosynthetic materials and testing.
- ISO/IEC 17025 - General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. Establishes criteria for laboratory quality systems relevant to geofoam testing.
By following the procedures in ASTM D7557/D7557M-09(2021), stakeholders can be confident in their approach to quality control, regulatory compliance, and optimal performance of EPS geofoam in geotechnical applications. This standard supports best practices in sampling, fosters consistency throughout the industry, and helps ensure the long-term success of infrastructure projects utilizing geofoam technology.
