SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This guide provides information and guidelines for the selection of components and the design of a built-up bituminous membrane waterproofing system in building deck construction. Where the state of the art is such that criteria for particular conditions are not established or have numerous variables that require consideration, applicable portions of design considerations, Sections 5 – 16, serve as reference and guidance for selection by the designer of the system.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide describes the design of fully adhered built-up bituminous membrane waterproofing systems for plaza deck and promenade construction over occupied spaces of buildings where covered by a separate wearing course.  
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.  
1.3 The committee with jurisdiction over this standard is not aware of any comparable standards published by other organizations.

5.1 This test method is used as a screening tool to determine the hydrostatic pressure to which a liquid-applied waterproofing membrane may be subjected without failing when stretched over a crack in the substrate. Standard Guide for Application of Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 Asphalt-based, solvent-type, fibered or nonfibered, aluminum-pigmented roof coatings are used as a protective coating for solar reflection to prolong the life of roofing materials or where decorative qualities are desired.  
3.2 Suitable application of aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings is an important factor in achieving a successful long-term coating. Suitable application is, in part, dependent upon appropriate specifications to guide the work. This guide can be useful in facilitating development of an appropriate specification for surface preparation and application of the roof coating.  
3.3 Designers/specifiers of coatings may use this guide in preparing the application portion of their specification. Contractors working directly for the building owner may also use this guide.  
3.4 This guide is not all-inclusive. Manufacturer's application instructions should be consulted and geographical “area practices” considered. Consult membrane manufacturer and coating manufacturer for acceptability of procedures and products.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers the application methods for Specification D2824/D2824M Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings, Nonfibered, and Fibered without Asbestos, for application on asphalt built-up roof membranes, modified bitumen roof membranes, bituminous base flashings, concrete surfaces, metal surfaces, emulsion coatings, and solvent-based coatings. This guide does not apply to the selection of a specific aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coating type for use on specific projects. The fibered version of these coatings excludes the use of asbestos fibers.

5.1 This practice is for the sampling and analysis of existing built-up roof systems. For roofs under construction, use Practice D3617/D3617M.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice is a guide for removing test specimens from existing built-up roofing systems in the field and for determining the approximate quantities of the components of that specimen (Note 1). Components determined may be:

Standard Test Method for Failure End Point in Accelerated and Outdoor Weathering of Bituminous Materials

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The extent of cracking or pitting of bituminous films is a measure of the extent of deterioration due to weathering. Failure due to cracking is more accurately determined electrically than visually.  
4.2 Failure determined by this test method will depend not only on the characteristics of the bituminous material and the extent of weathering, but also on the film thickness, and the amount and type of mineral filler present.  
4.3 Tests on a similar material of known weathering characteristics (a control) exposed at the same time as the test material is strongly recommended as a check on the validity of the test results.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the use of a spark-generating apparatus for determination of failure due to cracking of bituminous materials undergoing accelerated or outdoor weathering on electrically conductive backings.

Standard Specification for Wax-Modified Asphalt Used in Roofing

ABSTRACT
This specification establishes the manufacturing process and physical requirements for wax-modified asphaltic products intended for built-up roof construction, construction of bituminous vapor retarder systems, adhering fleece-backed single-ply roof membranes, and adhering insulation boards used in various types of roof systems. The base asphalt shall be prepared from lightly oxidized petroleum asphalt, and the wax-modified asphalt shall incorporate one or more high melt-point synthetic waxes. Furthermore, the products shall be homogeneous and free of water.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers wax-modified asphaltic products intended for use in built-up roof construction, construction of bituminous vapor retarder systems, adhering fleece-backed single-ply roof membranes, and adhering insulation boards used in various types of roof systems. The specification is intended for general classification purposes only, and does not imply restrictions on roofing system design, such as the slope at which this asphalt may be used.  
1.2 These products have lower application temperatures compared to products specified by Specification D312/D312M.

ABSTRACT
This practice covers the application of mineral-colloid-stabilized, emulsified coal-tar pitch, as a weather protection and aliphatic-solvent-resistant sealer for use on bituminous pavements of airports, parking lots, and driveways. The procedure for preparation of (1) old asphalt surfaces, (2) new asphalt surfaces, and (3) emulsion, and the procedure for application of emulsion for the first coat and second coat are detailed. When sand addition to the top coat of the emulsion is necessary, the sand shall meet the prescribed sieve size requirements. Application precautions including weather conditions, pavement and air temperatures, drying time, and emulsion freezing are also provided.

Standard Test Method for Staining Tendency of Asphalt (Stain Index)

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method measures the tendency for oil components to separate spontaneously from asphalt. The separation of oil components can cause staining in asphalt roofing products and adjacent materials in storage and use.  
4.2 The stain index is related to the thermal stability of the asphalt. Higher stain index values indicate lower stability and greater tendency for staining.  
4.3 Use this procedure to determine the staining tendency of asphalt and to compare the results against a material for which the staining tendency is known.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the staining tendency of asphalt and the assignment of a stain index proportional to the extent of staining observed.  
1.2 This test method is applicable to asphalts having ring-and-ball softening points of 85 °C [185 °F] or greater.  
Note 1: This test method may be modified for use with other bituminous materials with softening points less than 85 °C [185 °F] by using a different temperature than specified in Section 7 by agreement of the interested parties. The report of results from such a test may cite this method but must clearly state the temperature employed in the exception and acknowledge that the interpretation of results in Section 9 and the precision and bias stated in Section 10 may not apply.

This specification deals with the standards for asphalt roofing in shingle form, composed of glass felt or felts impregnated and coated on both sides with asphalt, and surface on the weather side with minerals. Physical requirements of the shingles such as behavior on melting, tear strength, wind resistance, fire resistance, softening point, and pliability shall be measured immediately after packaging or at a reasonable time. Physical and performance requirements after application and during in-service use are however beyond the scope of this specification.
SCOPE

This specification is designed for the evaluation of products as manufactured. The test methods, physical requirements, and minimum masses are to be measured immediately after packaging or at a reasonable time, as agreed upon between buyer and seller, after manufacture and before installation. 1.2 Shingles meeting this specification are intended to be applied with a headlap of not less than 51 mm [2 in.].
