ABSTRACT
This specification covers laser-fused stainless steel bars, plates, and shapes of structural quality for use in bolted or welded structural applications. The butt-welded test pieces are welded using laser fusion and then machined into tensile test bars and root-bend test specimens. The term laser fusion is used in this specification to refer to a joining process that is able to produce a coalescence of material using the heat obtained from the application of a concentrated coherent light beam impinging on the surface of a weld joint.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers laser and laser hybrid welded stainless steel bars, plates, sharp-cornered profile (SCP), and built-up shapes of structural quality for use in bolted or welded structural applications. SCP and built-up shapes are used in, but not limited to, the following applications: industrial and general structural applications like buildings, including architecturally exposed steel structures (AESS); architectural steel profiles, such as curtain wall and staircases.
Note 1: The term laser fusion is also used to describe laser welding.
1.1.1 Supplementary requirements of an optional nature are provided. They shall apply only when specified by the purchaser.
Note 2: Since the product covered by this specification is manufactured in small lots on dedicated production lines, minimum product quality requirements are ensured by requiring welding process specification and operator qualification at each manufacturing facility in accordance with AWS, ASME, or ISO requirements. If required, the purchaser can specify higher levels of weld inspection; supplementary requirements for mechanical and corrosion testing; and other requirements.
Note 3: Because of the varying requirements of the end-use applications, different length tolerance and weld inspection levels may be specified.
1.2 Shapes covered in this specification include those defined in Article 3.1.2 of Specification A6/A6M, square and rectangular hollow sections, and additional shapes, including customized, that are made from two or more shapes, plates, bar, sheet, or strip.
1.3 This specification establishes the minimum requirements for manufacturing of laser and laser hybrid welded stainless steel shapes and requires the welds to, at a minimum, match the tensile and yield strength of the base metal. If base metals of different strengths are used, the lower strength base metal shall be matched.
1.4 This specification refers to Specifications A240/A240M, A276/A276M, or A479/A479M for chemical requirements, but the mechanical test requirements are determined by the mechanical properties section of this standard. This standard includes four strength grades. The default strength grade 1 is determined by the base metal standard. Grades 2 through 4 are for specification of higher strength levels.
1.5 The text of this specification contains notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. Such notes and footnotes, excluding those in tables and figures, do not contain any mandatory requirements.
1.6 Units—This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units; however, unless the purchase order or contract specifies the applicable M specification designation (SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply. The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use....

ABSTRACT
This specification covers chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip, modified by the addition of natural or enriched boron, for nuclear application. The austenitic chromium-nickel steels shall be solution annealed to meet the mechanical property requirements. The chemical analysis of representative material shall be performed to determine the required percentage of chemical elements. The tensile and hardness property requirements of the materials are presented. In the case of sheet or strip produced in coil form, two or more hardness test; one impact test, when required; and one or more tension test shall be made on specimens taken from each coil. In the case of sheet, strip, or plate produced in cut lengths, one tension test; one impact test, when required; and one or more hardness tests shall be made on each 100 or less pieces of the same heat and nominal thickness rolled separately or continuously and heat treated within the same operating period, either as a lot or continuously.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip, modified by the addition of natural or enriched boron, for nuclear application.
1.2 Borated stainless steels covered by this specification, because of their particular alloy content and specialized properties, may require special care in their fabrication and welding. Specific procedures are of fundamental importance, and it is presupposed that all parameters will be in accordance with approved methods capable of producing the desired properties in the finished fabrication.
1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 It is anticipated that the ASTM Subcommittees A01.06, A01.10, A01.17, A01.22, and A01.28 will use the standard composition limits listed in this guide for the grades identified by the corresponding UNS designation in the product specification unless there is a specific technical justification for doing otherwise. The compositions in this guide shall not be considered as chemical requirements for any particular product until adopted by the subcommittee overseeing that product.
4.2 Assuming that uniform compositions among the many product standards for stainless steel are desirable, the composition limits provided in this standard are to be used as guides in determining limits for each of the elements included in the total composition of each grade. The composition limits have been established with the intent that each product subcommittee will find it necessary to require only a minimum number of changes to reflect specific technical effects. Section 5 lists the general guidelines followed for determining the limits for each element; the limits established in this guide are based on these guidelines.
4.3 Not included in this standard stainless steel grade harmonization effort is an attempt to unify stainless steel compositions in ASTM product standards by any means other than recognizing current industry practices.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide provides a guide to ASTM Subcommittees A01.06, A01.10, A01.17, A01.22, and A01.28 for specifying chemical composition limits of wrought stainless steels. It is intended that these recommended grade composition limits be suitable for adoption by other standardization bodies that prepare standards for stainless steel products.
1.2 Included in this guide are the recommendations for determining the number of significant figures for specifying chemical composition from Test Methods, Practices, and Terminology A751.
1.3 All stainless steel UNS numbers and the stainless steel grades in all standards overseen by the aforementioned ASTM subcommittees have been included, except those grades applicable to restricted special end uses and alloys containing less than 10.5 % minimum chromium.
1.4 Not addressed are minor composition modifications which a specific product subcommittee may find necessary to accommodate effects of normal processing or to enhance fabricability by the producer or user, or both.
1.5 Also not generally addressed (except when established by ASTM product subcommittees) is a complete rationalization of all limits, especially when such would conflict with long-standing practices and is not justified by special technical effect.
1.6 Excluded from this guide are cast material and welding filler metal.
1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
