Standard Specification for Free-Machining Stainless Steel Bars

ABSTRACT
This specification covers hot-finished or cold-finished bars, except bars for forging, suitable for machining processes. It includes rounds, squares, and hexagons in the more commonly used types of stainless free-machining steels designed especially for optimum machinability and for general corrosion and high-temperature service. Bars may be furnished either hot finished or cold finished in one of the conditions specified. Materials shall adhere to specified chemical composition requirements. At least one hardness testing shall be made midway between surface and center on each lot to determine that the material conforms to hardness requirements. Also, test methods and definition for hardness testing are presented.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers hot-finished or cold-finished bars, except bars for forging (Note 1), suitable for machining processes. It includes rounds, squares, and hexagons in the more commonly used types of stainless free-machining steels designed especially for optimum machinability and for general corrosion and high-temperature service. Stainless steel bars other than the free-machining types are covered in a separate specification (Note 2).
1.2 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units; however, unless the purchase order or contract specifies the applicable M specification designation (SI units), the inch-pound units shall apply. The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI (metric) units are to be regarded separately as standard: within the text and tables, the SI units are shown in [brackets]. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents: therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.
Note 1: For bars for reforging, see Specification A314.
Note 2: For non-free machining stainless bars, see Specification A276.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM A582/A582M-22 is an international standard published by ASTM that specifies requirements for free-machining stainless steel bars. This specification covers hot-finished or cold-finished bars-excluding bars for forging-designed for optimal machinability as well as general corrosion and high-temperature service. It includes common forms such as rounds, squares, and hexagons made from austenitic, martensitic, and ferritic grades of free-machining stainless steels. The standard details the necessary chemical compositions, hardness requirements, and test procedures to ensure product suitability in precision machining applications.

ASTM A582/A582M is referenced in global procurement and is recognized for supporting efficient manufacturing of parts and components that require both corrosion resistance and machinability.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Products: Encompasses hot-finished and cold-finished stainless steel bars in rounds, squares, and hexagons, expressly excluding bars intended for forging.
  • Grade Coverage: Includes austenitic, martensitic, and ferritic free-machining stainless steel grades with specific chemical composition and mechanical property requirements.
  • Units of Measurement: Specification is available in both inch-pound and SI (metric) units, with systems to be used independently.
  • Chemical Requirements: Detailed chemical composition limits ensure optimal properties for machining and service requirements, as specified in referenced tables.
  • Hardness Criteria: Mechanical testing, particularly hardness tests, are required to validate conformance with specific property thresholds determined by bar type and condition.
  • Condition and Finish: Bars can be supplied in conditions such as annealed, intermediate temper, or hard temper, with options for hot or cold finishing according to application needs.
  • Certification and Test Reporting: Producers must provide certificates of compliance and test reports confirming adherence to the standard’s technical requirements.
  • General Requirements: Conformance with ASTM A484/A484M for general stainless steel bar requirements is mandatory.

Applications

The ASTM A582/A582M-22 standard is widely applied across industries where stainless steel bars must offer both machinability and corrosion resistance. Primary uses include:

  • Precision Machined Components: Ideal for manufacturing high-volume turned parts, such as fasteners, valves, connectors, shafts, and fittings, which demand tight tolerances and smooth finishes.
  • Automotive and Aerospace: Used in producing components subject to wear, high temperatures, and corrosive environments, such as sensor housings, bushings, and gear parts.
  • Industrial Equipment: Suitable for parts in pumps, instrumentation, and fluid handling systems requiring reliable performance and ease of machining.
  • General Engineering: Frequently specified in subcontract metalworking and OEM manufacturing for its balanced properties and standardization flexibility.

The use of free-machining stainless steel bars according to ASTM A582/A582M supports cost-effective production by reducing tool wear and improving machining efficiency, while ensuring compliance with international quality expectations.

Related Standards

ASTM A582/A582M cross-references several other standards critical to stainless steel bar production and procurement:

  • ASTM A276 - Specification for Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes (covers non-free machining types)
  • ASTM A314 - Specification for Stainless Steel Billets and Bars for Forging
  • ASTM A370 - Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products
  • ASTM A484/A484M - General Requirements for Stainless Steel Bars, Billets, and Forgings
  • ASTM A751 - Test Methods and Practices for Chemical Analysis of Steel Products
  • ASTM A959 - Guide for Specifying Harmonized Standard Grade Compositions for Wrought Stainless Steels
  • SAE J1086 - Recommended Practice for Numbering Metals and Alloys (UNS)

These related standards facilitate proper selection, testing, analysis, and global acceptance of stainless steel bars in quality-sensitive industrial applications. Using ASTM A582/A582M-22 helps buyers and manufacturers ensure product consistency, traceability, and compliance with recognized international best practices for stainless steel bar machining applications.
