Plastics piping systems for water supply or drainage and sewerage - Glass-reinforced thermosetting plastics (GRP) based on unsaturated polyester resin (UP) - Recommended practice for installation
This Technical Specification (CEN/TS) specifies recommended practices for the underground installation of piping systems made of glass-reinforced thermosetting plastics based on unsaturated polyester resin (GRP UP), intended to be used for pressure or non-pressure water or sewerage applications and complying with, as applicable, EN 14364 and/or EN 1796. It is applicable to GRP-UP piping systems of nominal sizes from DN 100 to DN 4000 which are intended to be used for the conveyance of liquids at temperatures up to 50 °C and at pressures of 0,5 bar and greater.
Design procedures, the determination of long-term safety factors based on a semi-probabilistic approach, surge allowance and allowable negative pressures for buried GRP pipe applications are addressed in CEN/TS 14807 [1].
Piping systems conforming to EN 1796 or EN 14364 can also be used for above-ground applications provided the influence of the environment and the supports is considered in the design of the pipes and joints. It is recommended to refer to ISO/TR 10986 [4] for guidelines for the installation of above-ground flexible jointed pipes.
NOTE It is the responsibility of the purchaser or specifier to make the appropriate selections from these aspects, taking into account their particular requirements and any relevant national regulations and installation practices or codes.

Overview
SIST-TS CEN/TS 14578:2014 is a technical specification developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that provides recommended practices for the installation of underground piping systems made from glass-reinforced thermosetting plastics (GRP) based on unsaturated polyester resin (UP). These GRP-UP piping systems are designed for the conveyance of water, drainage, and sewerage under both pressure and non-pressure conditions. Applicable for nominal pipe diameters ranging from DN 100 to DN 4000, the standard covers installations for liquids at temperatures up to 50 °C and pressures from 0.5 bar and above.
This CEN/TS complements existing product standards EN 14364 and EN 1796, focusing specifically on installation guidelines to ensure long-term operational safety and compliance with European requirements.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The specification applies primarily to underground installations but also supports above-ground applications when environmental and support factors are considered. It aligns with EN 14364 and EN 1796 product standards for GRP-UP piping systems.Installation Procedures and Care
Installation must follow the guidelines of ISO/TS 10465-1 regarding flexibility, mechanical compaction, and negative pressure limitations in buried pipes, especially for nominal stiffness SN ≤ 1250 pipes which require concrete encasement.Transportation and Storage
Special attention is given to transportation security to prevent impact damage. Storage guidelines include maximum stack heights and precautions against prolonged direct sunlight, especially to protect rubber sealing profiles.Pipe Deflection Limits
The standard stipulates a maximum initial ovalization of 1.5% and long-term deflection according to material properties, achieved by proper installation methods recommended in ISO/TS 10465-1.Material Properties and Jointing
The specification recommends using joints conforming with EN 1796 or EN 14364. It also highlights the range of linear expansion coefficients and the importance of obtaining manufacturer data on tensile modulus and strength.Cold Bending and Direction Changes
GRP-UP pipes are not suitable for cold bending; instead, fittings and flexible joints should be utilized to achieve directional changes.Pressure and Leak Rate Requirements
Testing criteria follow ISO/TS 10465-1, EN 805, and EN 1610 standards to ensure system integrity for pressure retention and leak rates.
Applications
SIST-TS CEN/TS 14578:2014 is designed to support:
Municipal and industrial water supply networks
For both pressured and gravity-driven conveyance systems, ensuring durability and safety in assemblies made from GRP-UP pipes.Drainage and sewerage infrastructure
Effective for non-pressure and pressure applications handling wastewater, providing chemical resistance and long service life.Large diameter piping installations
Covers pipes up to DN 4000, making it suitable for large-scale infrastructure projects.Underground pipeline systems
Emphasizes correct backfilling and installation procedures essential for buried pipe longevity and performance.Above-ground flexible piping systems
While primarily focused on underground use, guidance for above-ground installation is provided in conjunction with ISO/TR 10986.
