SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 60335-2-80/A2, a CENELEC amendment to the household-appliance safety standard for fans. It updates the safety rules for household and similar electrical fans, especially the way the general Part 1 requirements apply, the user groups covered by the scope, and one mechanical-strength test detail. Manufacturers, test laboratories, certification teams, and compliance staff use it when designing and checking fans for safety.

What does SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 specify?

SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 specifies amendment A2 to EN 60335-2-80:2003, so it changes the existing fan safety standard rather than replacing it. The document is for fans used as household and similar electrical appliances.

The amendment text is organized around the parts it changes:

  • the Foreword and Endorsement notice
  • the Introduction
  • Clause 1, Scope
  • Clause 21, Mechanical strength
  • the Bibliography

In practice, that means readers use this document together with the base standard, and apply only the updated points introduced here.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 60335-2-80:2009/A2:2009?

SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 mainly changes how the base fan standard is applied in a few safety areas. The most practical points are how Part 1 is used, who is included in the scope, and how one strength test is carried out.

Part 1 applies when Part 2 has no extra fan requirement

The Introduction states that if a Part 2 standard does not add a hazard-specific requirement, Part 1 applies. For readers, this means the fan standard is built on the general household-appliance safety rules, and you check the fan-specific rules on top of that general base.

The standard is a product family standard

The Introduction says this is a product family standard for safety, and that it takes precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject. In practice, teams should not add separate general hazard standards where the IEC 60335 series already addresses that hazard.

The scope includes vulnerable users and children playing

Clause 1 updates the scope wording for persons whose physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, prevent safe use without supervision or instruction, and for children playing with the appliance. For manufacturers and testers, this means the fan has to be considered in the hands of less experienced users and in foreseeable child-related situations.

Mechanical strength testing uses a limited probe force

Clause 21.101 adds a sentence that the test probe is applied with a force not exceeding 5 N. In practice, test laboratories must control the probe force during the mechanical-strength check so the result reflects the intended test severity.

The bibliography points to hot-surface assessment material

The Bibliography adds ISO 13732-1, titled for assessment of human responses to contact with hot surfaces. For designers, this is a useful reference when evaluating surface temperature hazards, while still keeping the fan standard as the main safety document.

What terms does SIST EN 60335-2-80:2009/A2:2009 define?

  • Amendment A2 - a change document that modifies the base standard instead of standing alone.
  • Part 1 - the general safety standard in the IEC 60335 series that applies when Part 2 gives no extra requirement.
  • Product family standard - a standard written for one family of related products, here fans.
  • Horizontal and generic standards - broad standards for hazards across many products, which the Introduction says are not applied again where the IEC 60335 series already covers the hazard.
  • Test probe - the probe used in the mechanical-strength check in Clause 21.101.
  • CENELEC - the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, which approved this amendment.

Who uses SIST EN 60335-2-80:2009/A2:2009?

SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 is used by fan manufacturers, appliance designers, safety engineers, test laboratories, and certification bodies. It is also relevant to compliance teams, quality managers, and buyers who need to verify that household and similar electrical fans are assessed against the correct safety rules. Regulators and market surveillance bodies can use it when checking whether a fan has been evaluated to the correct European standard.

What changed in SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 is an amendment to EN 60335-2-80:2003. The amendment updates the Introduction, revises the scope wording in Clause 1, adds the 5 N limit for the probe force in Clause 21.101, and adds ISO 13732-1 to the Bibliography.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 60335-2-80:2009/A2:2009?

SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 is used with the base standard EN 60335-2-80:2003, which it modifies. The text also refers to IEC 60335-2-80:2002/A2:2008 as the international version adopted without modification, and to Part 1 of the IEC 60335 series for the general safety requirements that apply when Part 2 gives no extra rule. ISO 13732-1 is listed in the Bibliography for hot-surface contact assessment.

What does the SIST EN 60335-2-80:2003/A2:2009 document contain?

The document contains the formal European amendment text, including the Foreword, approval notice, and implementation information. It then gives the exact revised wording for the Introduction, the Scope wording in Clause 1, and the added sentence in Clause 21.101 on probe force. It also updates the Bibliography with ISO 13732-1.
