Overview
SIST EN ISO 18674-3:2018/A1:2020 is the Amendment 1 to the international standard for geotechnical investigation and testing, specifically focused on geotechnical monitoring by field instrumentation using inclinometers. This European Standard, adopted under the Vienna Agreement between ISO and CEN, updates Part 3 of ISO 18674: the measurement of displacements across a line via inclinometer technology.
Inclinometers are critical tools used to monitor subsurface ground movement and displacements in construction and geotechnical engineering projects. This amendment refines the accuracy, repeatability, and methodology criteria for displacement measurement, enhancing site safety and structural reliability.
Key Topics
Measurement Principles
Inclinometers measure lateral displacements and rotations of soil or rock masses by detecting angular changes along a defined monitoring line in boreholes.Repeatability and Accuracy
The amendment revises how differences within a 24-hour period under repeatability conditions are evaluated – emphasizing that displacements should not be cumulatively considered beyond those limits. This ensures more reliable and consistent measurement data over time.Field Instrumentation Standards
It provides standardized procedures for installation, calibration, and data collection to guarantee consistent results across geotechnical monitoring projects.Collaborative Development
Developed jointly by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 182 (Geotechnics) and CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 341 (Geotechnical Investigation and Testing) to harmonize international and European standards.
Applications
Foundation and Underground Works
Inclinometer measurements guide engineers in monitoring ground movements to detect potential foundation failure or soil displacement risks affecting tunnels, shafts, or deep excavations.Slope Stability Monitoring
Tracking displacements across slopes to forecast landslides and mitigate geohazard risks.Construction Safety Management
Continuous geotechnical monitoring ensures construction activities do not adversely impact surrounding structures or underground utilities.Infrastructure Maintenance
Long-term displacement measurements support maintenance planning for critical infrastructure like dams, embankments, and retaining walls.Environmental and Geotechnical Research
Data from inclinometer monitoring assists in understanding soil behavior under various environmental conditions.
Related Standards
EN ISO 18674 Series
Other parts cover different geotechnical monitoring instrumentation such as piezometers and extensometers, providing a comprehensive framework for field measurement techniques.ISO/TC 182 Standards on Geotechnics
Includes guidelines on soil sampling, testing methods, and instrumentation techniques relevant to geotechnical site investigations.CEN/TC 341 Standards
European standards focused on earthworks, foundation construction, and subsurface investigations which complement the application of inclinometer measurements.
Practical Value
Adopting this amendment ensures:
- Enhanced data precision and consistency in monitoring lateral ground displacements.
- Conformance with international and European regulatory frameworks, enabling cross-border project compliance.
- Improved risk assessment and early warning capabilities during construction and geotechnical operations.
- Standardized approaches that reduce variability in field instrumentation practices and data interpretation.
This standard is essential for geotechnical engineers, construction supervisors, and safety managers seeking reliable methods to measure and interpret ground displacement with inclinometer technology, thereby safeguarding project integrity and optimizing geotechnical investigation outcomes.
